The call came a day after a South Korean military plane carrying 163 South Koreans, 51 Japanese and six Singaporeans from Israel arrived at Seoul Air Base in Seongnam, just south of the capital Seoul.
During the phone call, the two sides agreed to cooperate closely for the safety of citizens of both countries around the world, with Foreign Minister Kamikawa pledging that Japan will actively cooperate in similar situations in the future.
South Korea on October 13 deployed KC-330 tanker transport aircraft to evacuate its citizens from Israel following Hamas' surprise attack on Israel on October 7.
This is the first time the South Korean government has deployed military aircraft for such a purpose and the second flight to bring South Koreans back from Israel after 192 people on a Korean Air plane returned home on October 11.
