The first successful simultaneous heart and liver transplant in Vietnam

Vietnam - Germany Friendship Hospital has just successfully performed a simultaneous heart - liver transplant for the same patient in Vietnam.

According to information from the Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital, the transplant recipient is patient D.VH (male, 41 years old), suffering from heart failure and liver failure. Two years ago, the patient was diagnosed with end-stage heart failure and later developed acute liver failure, severe blood clotting disorder, and elevated liver enzymes.

The patient had to be intubated and put on cardiopulmonary bypass. However, these treatments could only prolong his life by a few days. The only way to save him was to have both a heart and liver transplant.

The organ donor was a 36-year-old male patient from Yen Thanh (Nghe An) who was brain dead due to a traffic accident and was treated at Nghe An General Hospital.

The patient's family agreed to donate organs in the hope that their relative's life would be revived to save the lives of other patients.

Upon receiving information requesting support for organ retrieval from Nghe An General Friendship Hospital, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital immediately organized remote professional guidance, sent experts to resuscitate, assess the condition and perform surgery to retrieve multiple organs including: kidney, liver, heart, cornea from the organ donor.

Viet Duc Friendship Hospital divided into 2 teams, one team stayed to support Nghe An General Friendship Hospital to transplant organs for 2 patients with end-stage kidney failure. The remaining team urgently transferred the liver and heart to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.

On October 1, the Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital performed a simultaneous liver and heart transplant. After 8 hours of surgery, the transplant was a great success.

The donor's heart and liver have been functioning stably in patient D.VH's body, and patient H's blood clotting index, liver enzymes, and bilirubin have gradually returned to normal. On the afternoon of October 5, patient H had his endotracheal tube removed and began to practice breathing on his own.

The simultaneous heart and liver transplant not only affirms the progress in the level of doctors and nurses at the Vietnam - Germany Friendship Hospital but also affirms a great step forward in organ transplant techniques in Vietnam, bringing new life and a chance to live to many unfortunate patients.
