The Cannes Film Festival's homepage has just announced that Studio Ghibli will be awarded the honorary Palme d'Or for lifetime achievement at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
This award honors the great contributions of filmmakers to world cinema in particular and popular culture in general over many decades.

The organizers also sent congratulations to the Studio Ghibli team:
"Like all icons of the 7th art, the characters and stories that Ghibli creates bring to our imagination rich, colorful universes, told through many sensitive stories and unique perspectives.
Thanks to Ghibli, Japanese animation has some of the greatest silver screen adventures, blending tradition and modernity.
Previously, the lifetime achievement award was often given to actors and directors with long-standing and great influence in world cinema such as Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, Jodie Foster...
This year's decision by Cannes to award this award to a group instead of an individual is unprecedented.
Studio Ghibli was founded in 1984 by genius animator Hayao Miyazaki and his late teammate Isao Takahata.
At that time, the two released their first film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and immediately caused a stir in Japan.
