Leveraging local advantages
Golden camellia is a medicinal plant with high economic value. It is a crop that has helped many people in Ba Chẽ district escape poverty and become wealthy.
As the household with the largest area of golden camellia tea cultivation in the region, Mr. Dam Van Cuong's family in Khe Long Ngoai village, Thanh Son commune, has approximately 5,000 tea plants grown on 2.5 hectares of hilly land. He said that, recognizing the great value of golden camellia tea, his family boldly converted nearly 10 hectares of land previously used for growing anise, cinnamon, and cypress to cultivate golden camellia tea and other medicinal plants, generating an annual revenue of about 500-700 million VND.
“Furthermore, the model of raising free-range chickens under the canopy of golden camellia trees is very effective. The trees provide shade for the chickens, and the chickens forage for grass, catch insects, and excrete fertilizer, which helps the trees grow better. As a result, I not only save on labor costs for weeding, tilling, and fertilizing, but the trees thrive, providing a stable income. I raise about 1,000 chickens each year,” Mr. Cuong added.
The district has intensified support for people to effectively transform the structure of crops and livestock, apply science and technology to production, and prioritize the development of large-timber forest plantations associated with medicinal plant cultivation... In particular, the district has created the most favorable conditions for people to access preferential policy credit sources to invest in models such as: planting large-timber trees, raising commercial guinea pigs, and nursery seedling cultivation...”.
Mr. Trieu Van Dung, Vice Chairman of the Ba Che District Farmers' Association
Not only Mr. Cuong's family, but also many other households in Ba Che district, encouraged and supported by the local authorities, have invested in growing golden flower tea to increase their income. Currently, Ba Che district has 300 hectares of medicinal plants, of which about 160 hectares are golden flower tea. Notably, many households have established large-scale, integrated golden flower tea cultivation and processing areas, bringing high economic efficiency and increasingly stable income.
Promoting the application of science and technology.
To successfully build an economic development model, Mr. Hoang Van Hung, a Tay ethnic minority member of the Tan Tien village cooperative in Don Dac commune, has successfully implemented a commercial chicken farming model with 3,000 chickens. To achieve this, Mr. Hung's family boldly invested in accessing preferential loans from the District Social Policy Bank, constructing chicken coops to serve the people in the commune and neighboring communes.
Sharing about his family's economic model, Mr. Hung said: "In 2018, my family started raising chickens. Initially, it was very difficult, especially without capital; it took us 7 or 8 months of hardship. From the second season onwards, we received loan support, participated in training courses, and proactively learned from experience, leading to success. In particular, in recent years, raising medicinal chickens (chickens that are less prone to disease, with delicious, rich, and crispy meat, making them very popular in the market) has brought significant economic benefits."
According to Mr. Hung, the annual income from commercial chicken farming brings his family over 300 million VND. Currently, his family's commercial chicken farming model is developing well, with a flock of 6,000 chickens and a total farm area of 2,500m².
Like Mr. Cuong and Mr. Hung, in Ba Che, there are increasingly more young farmer members who are excelling in production and business. Examples include: Mr. Ninh Van Nam from Thanh Son commune, who developed the cultivation of Codonopsis pilosula (ba kích) and earns 300 million VND/year; Mr. Trieu Quay Phuc from Khe Long village, Thanh Son commune, who developed a plant nursery and earns 250 million VND/year; and Mr. Trieu Tien Manh and Mr. Trieu Kim Vay from Don Dac commune, who raised bamboo rats and earned nearly 300 million VND/year…
Mr. Trieu Van Dung, Vice Chairman of the Ba Che District Farmers' Association, said: “In order to promote production development, increase income, and enrich the homeland, the district has intensified support for people to effectively transform the structure of crops and livestock, apply science and technology to production, and prioritize the development of large-timber forest planting associated with medicinal plant cultivation... In particular, the district creates the most favorable conditions for people to access preferential policy credit sources to invest in models such as: planting large-timber trees, raising commercial guinea pigs, and nursery seedlings...”.
