By 2025, Vietnam's tourism industry aims to welcome 22-23 million international visitors - an outstanding number that requires a comprehensive change in the tourism ecosystem. This not only demonstrates a strong determination to recover the economy after the pandemic but also reflects Vietnam's potential and attractiveness in the eyes of international friends. However, according to industry experts, to achieve this goal, we need to clarify the decisive factors.
According to the latest report of the General Statistics Office, in January 2025, international visitors to Vietnam reached nearly 2.1 million arrivals, an increase of 18.5% over the previous month and an increase of 36.9% over the same period last year.
According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), the Lunar New Year holiday recorded a high increase in the number of international visitors to many localities. Specifically, Quang Ninh is estimated to welcome 228,700 visitors; Da Nang is estimated to welcome more than 228,000 visitors, an increase of 29% over the same period in 2024; Quang Nam is estimated to welcome 157,000 visitors, an increase of 40%; Hanoi is estimated to welcome 142,000 visitors, an increase of 15.8%; Ho Chi Minh City is estimated to welcome 87,300 visitors, an increase of 16.5%...
These are positive initial signals, showing a bright picture of Vietnamese tourism in 2025.
First of all, it is necessary to recognize that international tourist markets are clearly shifting. Traditional markets such as China, Korea, and Japan continue to be major sources of visitors, but new markets such as India, Southeast Asia, and European countries are opening up great opportunities. To fully exploit the potential of these markets, Vietnam needs to improve service quality, providing more unique and diverse tourism experiences. Infrastructure systems must be heavily invested in, especially transportation, hotels, resorts, and tourist service facilities.
Along with that, an important factor that cannot be ignored is the promotion of international tourism communication and marketing. Building the image of Vietnam tourism is not only based on natural advantages but also needs to be enhanced through campaigns to promote the image of night tourism, green tourism and heritage tourism - trends that are attracting international tourists. Organizing tourism events and cultural festivals will be a great opportunity to create highlights and enhance the value of Vietnam tourism brand.
In addition, maintaining and developing sustainable tourism products is indispensable. Tourists are increasingly concerned about minimizing the impact on the environment when traveling. Therefore, developing eco-tours, rural tourism, or experiential tourism associated with environmental protection will be an important trend in the strategy to attract international visitors. In addition, experts also note that tourism services and products cannot be separated from the quality of human resources. A team of professional tour guides, knowledgeable about culture, history, and fluent English communication skills will make a big difference in the tourist experience.
To achieve the target of welcoming 23 million international visitors, management agencies need to establish appropriate support policies, simplify entry procedures, and enhance air connectivity between tourist destinations and countries around the world. In particular, upgrading digital infrastructure and developing smart tourism will be key factors to retain tourists and strongly increase the number of international visitors in the long term.
The goal of welcoming 22 - 23 million international visitors represents great expectations for the Vietnamese tourism industry. Some say that this is not an easy goal, but it is not impossible. However, others say that we should not just chase after numbers. Because numbers only say something, not everything. We need to get to the bottom of it, so that Vietnam, with its unique beauty and distinct tourism strengths, can soon become a destination for luxury tours and high-quality tourism. In other words, Vietnam must become a destination for "super-rich" groups of tourists. Therefore, Vietnam needs to have a comprehensive strategy, combining infrastructure improvement, service quality improvement, creative tourism product development and international marketing promotion. All of these factors will create a strong Vietnamese tourism industry that can compete and attract international tourists in the context of growing globalization.
It can be said that the Vietnamese tourism industry is facing a golden opportunity to rise up and affirm its position on the international tourism map. However, to attract international visitors, we cannot rely solely on traditional factors but must combine them with innovative strategies, sustainable development and improved service quality. That is the only way to bring the Vietnamese tourism industry to this ambitious goal.
