(CLO) On Wednesday, a Japan Airlines plane collided with the tail of a Delta Air Lines plane on the runway at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in the United States.

Delta spokesperson Samantha Moore Facteau announced that the plane, which was preparing to depart for Mexico, "was in the process of de-icing" when its tail "touched the wingtip" of the Japan Airlines plane at approximately 10:17 a.m. Pacific Time.

Sea-Tac Airport said in a separate statement that the Japan Airlines plane was taxiing on the runway while the Delta flight was parked when the collision occurred.

Facteau stated that there were 142 passengers on Delta Air Lines Flight 1921 at the time. It is unclear how many people were on Japan Airlines Flight 68, but airport officials said no casualties were reported on either flight. Passengers disembarked from both aircraft.

According to FlightAware, the Japan Airlines plane had just arrived in Seattle from Tokyo. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which is investigating the incident, notes that because the aircraft were near the arrival hall, they were not under air traffic control.

The FAA has suspended some flights, but Sea-Tac Airport says the impact will be minimal.

Amid growing concerns about aviation safety in the U.S., particularly following the recent aviation disaster in Washington, D.C., the FAA announced it has provided nearly $12 billion in funding to airports nationwide.

According to FAA data, more than $178 million has been allocated to Sea-Tac Airport, of which $31.5 million has been approved by the U.S. Congress for improvements to the airport's terminals.
