Harris' earrings 'embroidered' by conspiracy theorists

According to News.com.au on September 12, some supporters of former US President Donald Trump created a conspiracy theory that Vice President Kamala Harris wore a disguised earpiece during the debate, although no solid evidence has been provided.

This conspiracy theory is believed to be an excuse to explain why they think Mr. Trump's debate performance was not as good as they expected, even though the former president insisted that he had the best debate ever.

Harris-Trump Debate: Who Won?

The mainstream response from Republicans, including Mr. Trump, was to complain about the moderators, David Muir and Linsey Davis, who repeatedly interrupted to correct Mr. Trump’s statements, unlike the moderators in the debate between Mr. Trump and President Joe Biden.

However, some netizens reacted in an unusual way and came up with a theory that Ms. Harris was prompted during the debate, through an earpiece disguised as a normal earring.

Among them is the account X MAGABrittany, which claims that Ms. Harris is wearing NOVA H1 camouflage headphones, a product once developed by a now-defunct German company.

"These earrings are packed with the latest technology hidden in real pearls to give you music, phone calls, and a digital assistant all day long. Just like regular earrings, the NOVA H1 is worn on your ear and transmits sound from inside the pearl straight into your ear canal," according to the product's advertising.

This hypothesis was then continued to be rumored by many Trump supporters.

However, according to News.com.au , Ms. Harris was not wearing the earrings. A close-up, high-resolution image shows that she is wearing her usual jewelry, earrings from Tiffany & Co.

The design is similar to the company’s South Sea Pearl, which sells for more than $3,000. So Harris did not have a secret earpiece. In fact, the Democratic candidate may have anticipated the moderators’ questions, since she had practiced extensively beforehand.

Headphones are banned at presidential debates. Candidates were not allowed to bring notes or other aids during the ABC News debate. CBS has reached out to the Harris campaign for comment.

According to CBS, there have been many theories in the past about US presidential candidates wearing secret earpieces during debates.

After the debate between Mr. Trump and President Joe Biden in June, many online accounts accused, without evidence, that Mr. Biden was wearing headphones.

In 2020, Mr. Trump’s campaign posted on Facebook that Mr. Biden wore an earpiece during the September 2020 debate. Mr. Biden’s campaign has denied the allegations, and high-resolution images from the debate show that the rumored audio device may have been just wrinkles in his clothing.

In 2016, conspiracy theory site True Pundit accused former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of wearing an earpiece to "eavesdrop on conversations" in an NBC News forum.

Conspiracy theories aren't just a right-wing thing. In 2004, the internet was abuzz with rumors that former President George W. Bush had a device that transmitted audio to his strategist Karl Rove, with a strange rectangle on his shoulder.

A Bush campaign spokesman later told The New York Times that "it was likely due to a wrinkle in his suit jacket or a wrinkle in the fabric."
