The meeting between delegations of the Kyrgyz and Tajik governments on demarcation of national borders took place on October 2 in the town of Batken, Kyrgyzstan, the source said.
The agency also confirmed: “During the meeting, the two sides had a thorough exchange of views on the demarcation of the Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border. After emphasizing the need for a more specific description of the crossing of the project line between the two countries' borders in the remaining areas, the heads of the delegations gave appropriate instructions to the working groups.”
Taking place “in an atmosphere of friendship and mutual understanding”, the meeting ended with the signing of a protocol.
At the same time, the delegations of both sides stressed that the need to “strengthen friendship, mutual understanding and trust between border areas was highlighted, as well as to continue active cooperation between the regions”.
The Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border occasionally experiences serious conflicts between local residents and border guards, as parts of the national border are not demarcated.
Recently, working groups of the two countries have continued to discuss the issue of border demarcation. However, about 290 km out of the total nearly 1,000 km of border have not been demarcated.
