Pokrovsk hotspot comes under shelling from Russia

Officials in the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk said Russian troops attacked the city at around 11am local time on September 15, killing one person. Officials added that Moscow also shelled a building near a gas station in the city, but did not provide details of the damage, AFP reported.

Russia has been advancing on Pokrovsk for months, according to local authorities, and is now just 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the eastern outskirts of the city. The city sits at the crossroads of important rail and road routes that support Ukrainian forces on the eastern front. Pokrovsk has long been a target for Moscow’s military, and observers say that if it can take control of the city, the Russian military will gain a major advantage in eastern Ukraine.

Earlier this week, Russia carried out airstrikes that damaged two overpasses in Pokrovsk, including one connecting Pokrovsk with the neighboring town of Myrnograd, local media reported.

CNN aired an interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on September 15. He said Russia is gaining the upper hand in eastern Ukraine and the situation in the region is “very difficult.” Mr. Zelensky mentioned that half of the Ukrainian brigade lacked weapons and ammunition, saying that Western weapons aid was arriving too slowly.

“We need 14 brigades ready. So far, the support packages are not even enough to equip four brigades,” he said. US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on September 14 that Washington was studying a “significant” new aid package for Ukraine.

Meanwhile in the city of Kharkiv, Mr. Zelensky said on September 15 that at least 30 people were injured after a Russian guided bomb hit a high-rise building, Reuters reported.

Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, is located near the Russian border and is regularly attacked by bombs, missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Russian officials have not commented on Ukraine’s claims. Moscow has always insisted that it does not target civilians or civilian infrastructure in its attacks.

Russia claims to have shot down two Ukrainian Su-27 fighters in 24 hours

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on September 15 that its air force had shot down two Ukrainian Su-27 fighters in the past 24 hours, although it did not mention the location of the shootdown, according to TASS.

In addition, Moscow also said it shot down a MiG-29 fighter, 55 UAVs and intercepted a HIMARS rocket from Ukraine.

Regarding the situation in Russia's Kursk region, the Moscow military reported repelling at least 10 Ukrainian attacks, defeating Kyiv's mechanized brigades and air attacks on settlements in Kursk.

The Russian military said on September 15 that Ukraine had lost more than 300 soldiers and 22 pieces of armor in 24 hours, adding that Kyiv had lost more than 13,000 soldiers since launching its operation to invade Kursk in early August. Ukraine did not comment on Russia's statement.

Ukraine denies ceasefire proposal with Russia

German newspaper Bild reported on September 14 that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky plans to propose a ceasefire plan with Russia in some war zones, as part of a “victory plan” that Mr. Zelensky plans to present to Western leaders.

The plan includes a request to allow Ukraine to use Western weapons for long-range strikes on Russian soil, as well as Kyiv agreeing to local ceasefires in some areas, thereby temporarily freezing hostilities, the newspaper said.

However, on September 15, the Ukrainska Pravda newspaper quoted the Ukrainian president's media advisor Dmytro Lytvyn as affirming that the information given by Bild was false and that the media agency had not seen any documents about the victory plan.

Bild spread false information, without having seen the victory plan and among the few people involved in preparing this plan, no one had ever spoken to Bild ,” said adviser Lytvyn.

Mr Lytvyn added that Ukraine opposes any freezing of the war, and this has been communicated at all levels of the Ukrainian government. “It is important to us that the United States supports Ukraine’s plan for victory, not that Kyiv surrenders or freezes military action,” he said.

Ukraine receives 18 "homemade" self-propelled guns donated by Denmark

The Ukrainian army has received 18 Bohdana self-propelled artillery systems, weapons produced in Ukraine and donated by Denmark, Ukrainska Pravda reported on September 15.

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said he ordered 18 Bohdana guns from Ukrainian manufacturers in July, which have just been delivered to the Ukrainian army.

Denmark also became the first country in the European Union (EU) to allocate funds to buy weapons from Ukrainian manufacturers, which are then delivered to the Kyiv military. Mr. Poulsen said that buying weapons made in Ukraine would be much cheaper than those made in Western countries. In addition, maintenance costs would be lower.

On August 19, the media reported that Denmark was preparing to allocate $115 million to buy weapons for Ukraine. With the latest move, Denmark also urged other European countries to provide the Ukrainian army with weapons produced in Denmark.

Bohdana is a 155mm self-propelled gun, first put into service with the Ukrainian army in 2023. This 28-ton vehicle has a crew of 5, with an operating range of 1,200 km. The Bohdana can fire 5 rounds per minute, with a range of 42 km, up to 50 km with specialized ammunition.
