Identifying pineapple as one of the crops that brings high income to people in some localities in the province, the Center for Research, Testing and Services of Plant Varieties (Thanh Hoa Agricultural Institute) has researched and organized the production of tissue cultured pineapple varieties (MD2), with the expectation of contributing to increasing the value and output, meeting the requirements of commercial pineapple production for farmers in the province.

After receiving the technology transfer from the Thanh Hoa Plant Variety Research, Testing and Service Center, this year's pineapple crop, Mr. Nguyen Phuong Nam, village 6, Xuan Minh commune (Tho Xuan) organized the production of about 2 hectares of MD2 tissue-cultured pineapple varieties. This is the first year his family has applied the production of new pineapple varieties, from tissue-cultured sources. After more than 6 months of production, the pineapple plants have grown well, promising to bring high economic efficiency. Mr. Nguyen Phuong Nam said: "My family has been producing raw pineapple for decades. However, this is the first crop producing MD2 pineapple varieties. Thanks to proper care, the plants are now growing well, and the entire pineapple area has been contracted by the enterprise to consume the products since the beginning of the crop. It is expected that MD2 pineapple plants will yield higher yields and quality than other mass pineapple varieties. After this crop, we will expand MD2 pineapple production to the entire hill area of our family".
It is known that MD2 is a pineapple variety that can grow well, is disease-free, has high productivity and quality, meets the requirements for processing or exporting fresh fruit and has a much higher value than some pineapple varieties that are currently being mass-produced. However, this is a tissue-cultured pineapple variety, so before 2023, Thanh Hoa province did not have any tissue culture facilities that met the requirements for organizing large-scale seed production. In 2023, Thanh Hoa Plant Seed Research, Testing and Service Center cooperated with IVP Plant Seed and Medicinal Herbs Joint Stock Company in Hanoi to propagate MD2 pineapple by tissue culture method. Up to now, the center has exported to the nursery and provided the first batches of seeds to people.
Mr. Nguyen Trong Quyen, Director of Thanh Hoa Plant Variety Research, Testing and Service Center, said: The center has coordinated with enterprises to transfer technology and organize large-scale production of MD2 pineapple varieties to supply and supplement the set of raw pineapple varieties for people in the province. Although it has acquired the current technology and tissue culture process, the center is only capable of supplying varieties for about 60 hectares of production for the provincial market. It is expected that from 2024, the demand for MD2 pineapple varieties in the province will increase. Therefore, the center will focus on investing in technology, human resources and techniques to meet the demand for high-quality pineapple varieties for people, ensuring the source of pineapple materials for processing and export.
According to the Project on Concentrated Fruit Tree Development in Thanh Hoa Province to 2025, with a vision to 2030, pineapple is considered one of the key concentrated crops, with a maintained area of about 3,500 hectares and an output of 110,250 tons/year. Therefore, the application of scientific advances and the use of tissue-cultured pineapple varieties with high productivity and quality are among the conditions for creating products that meet export standards, helping people increase economic value. It is expected that in 2024, the Thanh Hoa Plant Variety Research, Testing and Service Center will coordinate to produce about 4 million MD2 seedlings to supply to producers in the province.
Along with promoting the linkage of MD2 tissue culture pineapple production to supply the market, Thanh Hoa Plant Seed Research, Testing and Service Center is strengthening the connection and developing production according to the value chain with this crop. Therefore, the entire pineapple growing area using tissue culture seeds of the people will be signed by the enterprise to consume the product right from the beginning of the season. This is not only a favorable condition to ensure income for the people but also contributes to the sustainable development of the pineapple raw material area of the province.
