Sending 163 players from 14 age groups of men and women to participate in the 2023 Southeast Asian Open Age Group Chess Championship in Thailand from June 17 to 26, the Vietnamese youth team achieved an unbelievable achievement with 178 medals of all kinds, including 92 gold medals.
After winning almost all the individual and team championships in the standard chess event, the Vietnamese youth chess team continued to assert their strength in the last two days of competition of the tournament. In the rapid chess event, the Vietnamese "young" players only gave way to their opponents in the U12 female, U18 and U20 male age groups. Similarly, but to a lesser extent, only the individual gold medal set in the U20 male blitz chess age group slipped away from the Vietnamese team.
Not only dominating in terms of individuals, the evenness and overwhelming numbers also helped the Vietnamese team "sweep" all 28 gold medals for men's and women's team in the two events of rapid chess and blitz chess.
According to experts, this is an unprecedented achievement in the history of the tournament. In all three categories of fast, blitz and standard, the Vietnamese team won a total of 41 out of 42 team championships in all age groups!
The Vietnamese delegation sent nearly 200 players to compete in all age groups.
Among the most stable players in the tournament, Dinh Nho Kiet and Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong were two outstanding faces when they won all the gold medals in the participating events.
If Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong was "unrivaled" in the U20 women's group when she won all three events of rapid, blitz and standard chess and made an important contribution to bringing home all three gold medals for the U20 women's team, then young player Dinh Nho Kiet shone "in his own way".
