Interesting car testing profession

According to Mr. Le Nguyen, his regular job is to sit in cars that have not yet been released to the market and “bug” the latest features of the car. Such “road tests” often last for months. A team of 8 people on 4 test cars of a brand new electric car line that has not yet appeared on the market.

As the sole representative of the software development side, Le Nguyen travels with the customer representatives every day. During the day, he “travels” through the European routes like a real traveler, and at night, he sleeps in a pre-booked hotel. Nguyen loves photography, so he also buys enough filming equipment to take pictures on the car. He records many photos and videos of the places he passes by.

In the IT industry, Mr. Nguyen's job is called tester, whose job is to check, evaluate and propose ways to improve the product before it is accepted by customers and put into practice. Tester is a specific job in the IT industry, while car tester is somewhat new and more interesting.

In the past, a car was defined purely by its mechanics, but today it is redefined by software. With the number of lines of code in a car being about 7 times that of the most modern aircraft, it places many strict requirements on testing its features.

Before a new car model or an upgrade is released to the market, it must undergo testing to ensure it is safe, reliable, high-performance, and meets customer needs.

As one of the key areas, FPT Software's automotive software development projects are constantly expanding to meet the increasing demands of the world's leading manufacturers and suppliers of automotive equipment. Some projects employ up to 300 people, along with opportunities to work abroad for members to experience, learn and develop.

For Mr. Nguyen, the opportunity opened up in 2022 when he was nominated to go to Germany to help build a testing team in the European market.

Going to work is like going backpacking in Europe

Unlike many people's image of a tester's job as sitting for hours in front of a computer in the office to find bugs in code, when doing road testing, Mr. Nguyen travels 500km every day, 5-6 days a week through lands that speak different languages, have different cultures, landscapes, and climates.

To “test” features such as self-driving support, lane changing, checking the stability of the chassis system, etc., Mr. Le Nguyen and the car experienced many different terrains and conditions, sometimes accelerating to 208 km/h on the highway, and sometimes leisurely at a speed of 10-15 km/h on narrow, winding roads; if in Spain the car ran under 40-degree heat, when in Sweden and Norway, he enjoyed the -20-degree cold outside.

On the journey, not only sitting in the car, Mr. Le Nguyen also walked to experience the places he passed through. He was impressed by the white winter scenery in Northern Europe, or the nostalgic and luxurious beauty of French architecture, feeling the passionate football atmosphere in the stadium and the rich food in the night market of Spain, immersing himself in the ancient streets of Madrid or the beautiful Mediterranean beaches such as Benidorm, Gruissan...

For Mr. Nguyen, his current job is the most interesting and inspiring. While working professionally and participating deeply in the world's leading projects, Mr. Le Nguyen also gets to travel everywhere and experience diverse cultures. To convey positive energy to his colleagues and young people in Vietnam who are willing to broaden their horizons, he is planning to make a series of vlogs "Europe on the Go".

As of June 2024, FPT Software has more than 32,000 employees working in 30 countries and territories.
