Thanh Hoa was a free zone, a great rear base during the 9-year long resistance war against the French colonialists, contributing with the army and people of the whole country to the Dien Bien Phu victory that "resounded throughout the five continents/shook the world", forcing the French colonialists to continue to sit at the negotiating table, sign the Geneva Agreement recognizing the country's sovereignty, unity, independence, integrity and democracy, and suspending hostilities in Vietnam.

Respecting and thoroughly implementing the Geneva Agreement, Thanh Hoa is one of the localities assigned by the Central Government to welcome soldiers, wounded soldiers, cadres, and compatriots from the South to the North, and the province urgently prepares the necessary conditions.

According to Mr. Tran Chi Trac, 86 years old, in Bao An street, Quang Tien ward, Sam Son city: In addition to expanding the road to Hoi Port, local cadres and workers went to the upper Thanh Hoa region to exploit, carried bamboo, reeds, and palm leaves down rafts, mobilized hundreds of people and workers from neighboring districts to construct, built 2 shelters of thousands of square meters to serve as reception areas, provide initial health care, accommodation, living and studying places for soldiers and cadres from the south going to the north. The television bridge conveys images, documentary films, and information from historical witnesses, taking viewers back in time to look back at the "historical milestones" and the Vietnamese people's desire for peace and national unification. The army and people of the South have seriously implemented the Geneva Agreement. There were tearful farewells, along with the message "go gloriously - stay bravely" and the people of the North enthusiastically welcomed and received the cadres, soldiers, families, and students of the South with all their hearts, feelings, and the best conditions, filled with the love of brothers and sisters of one family.

Former Deputy Commander of Military Region 9, Major General Tran Van Nien noted: The affection of the northern people towards the southern brothers who had gathered was deep and profound, beyond description. At that time, the people were still lacking food and clothing, but they still steadfastly cared for the southern soldiers to have enough food and warm sleep, and I personally felt very warm. Far from home, each cadre, soldier, and student in the south focused on studying, working, training, strictly following military discipline, and being ready to accept any task.

With the plot to deeply intervene and deny the right to self-determination of the Vietnamese people, the US imperialists set up the puppet government of Ngo Dinh Diem, did not hold a general election to unify the country, and openly suppressed the revolutionary movement in the South. The people, cadres, soldiers, and students in the South worked hard, studied, worked, and joined the army and people of the North to build socialism, a great rear base, and provided human and material support to the southern battlefield, contributing to the army and people of the whole country in completely liberating the South and reunifying the country on the historic day of April 30, 1975. The South was ahead and behind, but is now a dynamically developing region, a dynamic economic region, contributing to building Vietnam's foundation and position in the period of integration and development.

Later, I had the opportunity to return to Thanh Hoa, where I was born. I really want to thank the time when I was born and came into the North. Although we were still very poor, we were able to get a good education.”
