Tran Gia Bao scored a goal at the age of 16 in the V-League
V-League 2024 - 2025 opened with 7 very emotional matches with 11 goals (average 1.57 goals/match), including a very special goal by young player Tran Gia Bao, sealing a 4-0 victory for HAGL Club against the home team Quang Nam.
That goal helped Tran Gia Bao quickly become famous throughout the country with his achievement of scoring a goal in the highest tournament in Vietnam when he was only 16 years, 8 months and 12 days old.
Gia Bao's achievement is very outstanding, only losing to the record of his senior Phan Thanh Binh (born November 1, 1986) who set it in the 2003 season, when he scored against HAGL in the 6th minute to open his professional playing account at the age of 16 years, 4 months and 15 days.
According to Phan Thanh Binh, that was the first time he was selected by coach Doan Minh Xuong to play as a starter in his first season of professional competition. Although the team later lost 2-3 to HAGL after a brace from Nguyen Viet Thang (minute 63, 90+2 and Minh Nghia minute 87), it was a great encouragement for him to try harder in the future.
Coach Phan Thanh Binh hopes Tran Gia Bao will fly high in HAGL's shirt.
That goal was extremely meaningful when after only 6 minutes of playing, he immediately scored against the "Dream Team" HAGL with Thai stars Kiatisak, Dusit, Taiwan and a strong domestic squad of Manh Dung, Van Dan, Duy Quang, Viet Thang...
This goal helped Phan Thanh Binh set 2 records: Youngest player to play and youngest scorer in the national championship, opening a career of great achievements, with the peak being the 2008 AFF Cup championship, a record of 4 times participating in the SEA Games, including 3 silver medals in 2003, 2005, 2009.
Sharing with Thanh Nien Newspaper, Phan Thanh Binh said he was very happy to see Tran Gia Bao shine in the V-League arena, scoring at the age of 16 like he did years ago.
He expressed: "When I heard that Gia Bao scored a goal in V-League 2024 - 2025, I felt very happy for him as well as the quality of HAGL's young players.
Tran Gia Bao is the latest young talent introduced by HAGL.
From my perspective, I feel very happy for Gia Bao. I feel Gia Bao's joy and happiness just like myself 21 years ago. This is a bright spot for fans, when Coach Vu Tien Thanh has faith in the young force.
I also hope Gia Bao will stay awake because that is the initial encouragement. Everything is just the beginning, Gia Bao will have a very long journey ahead. He will have to try harder to compete in a professional environment, to be able to get another starting position at HAGL Club."
Another player who opened his V-League account very early was striker Nguyen Cong Thanh (born October 5, 1997, Dong Thap) who scored against Hai Phong at Lach Tray Stadium in V-League 2015 when he was only 17 years and 246 days old.
However, Cong Thanh's career was not as smooth as his fellow countryman Phan Thanh Binh's, as Dong Thap football struggled in the lower divisions. After the 2021 season playing for Ho Chi Minh City Club, he recently moved to play for Ha Tinh Club.
Mr. Vu Tien Thanh advised his young student after his successful debut.
At the same time, Phan Thanh Binh also sent a sincere message to his junior Tran Gia Bao, who is taking professional steps in the HAGL Club shirt, the old team he played for in the 2009-2010 season.
He shared: "Gia Bao will have to be patient and persistent in practicing better, trying to quickly improve his abilities, always striving and being ready to come off the bench more often, so that one day he can compete for a starting position.
It is a fact that having to regularly play in the official squad is a recognition of a professional player's ability. It will be a long journey and I hope Gia Bao will reap many more successes."
Currently, after hanging up his boots and retiring from playing, Phan Thanh Binh is pursuing a coaching career. He is currently a member of Dong Thap Club, playing in the 2024-2025 national first division.

"I think Tran Gia Bao can absolutely compete with his peers. This will be a great opportunity for him to show his talent in the Vietnam U.17 team. I sincerely hope Gia Bao will stay calm, put aside the praise to focus on his expertise," Phan Thanh Binh shared.
