(Dan Tri) - Sharing about childhood memories with his younger brother, People's Artist Dang Thai Son, Mr. Tran Thanh Binh said: "Uncle Son is my mother's favorite child. He is often given priority...".
People's Teacher (PE) Thai Thi Lien is one of the founders of the Vietnam Music School (now the Vietnam National Academy of Music), the first head of the Piano Department and the one who trained many generations of famous piano artists.
A lifelong passion for art
Thai Thi Lien was born in 1918 into an intellectual family in Saigon. She showed her musical talent early and began studying piano at the age of 4. Her artistic journey spanned from Saigon, Paris to Prague - where she graduated with honors from the Prague Conservatory.
After returning to Viet Bac in 1951, she not only participated in the resistance war but also actively participated in performance and training. Since 1956, as Head of the Piano Department, she has contributed to laying the foundation for the development of the professional piano industry in Vietnam.
Many of her students have become famous artists and teachers such as: Nguyen Huu Tuan, Hoang My, Phuong Chi, Tuyet Minh, Kim Dung, Tran Thu Ha and Do Hong Quan.
Most notable is Dang Thai Son, her youngest son, who was the first Asian to win first prize at the Chopin International Piano Competition.
At the press conference, Professor, Doctor, People's Artist Tran Thu Ha - former Head of the Piano Department, former Director of the Music Academy, and also the daughter and famous student of Ms. Thai Thi Lien shared: "Music is not only my mother's passion, but also an important part of her life. She often uses music to relieve stress and keep her spirit comfortable. This could be one of the reasons why she lived to be 106 years old."
Despite her old age and declining health, she still maintains her dynamism and enthusiasm and regularly practices the piano.
"When she is 100 years old, my mother still wants to go swimming. She exercises her brain when she can't sleep by reading the notes of her favorite pieces. Despite her hearing loss, she still listens to music from her children and grandchildren. In particular, my mother has an excellent memory. She remembers the names of every student, colleague and even everyone's relatives," said People's Artist Tran Thu Ha.
Proud to have her mother as her teacher, Ms. Tran Thu Ha expressed: "My mother is the one who passed on to me valuable lessons and experiences from life, especially in the field of music. These things have deeply influenced my development and success."
Single-handedly supporting a large family with his music
From the perspective of someone who does not pursue art, architect Tran Thanh Binh, the eldest son of Mrs. Thai Thi Lien, shared that she is a mother who loves her children wholeheartedly but is also very strict.
"Thinking about our mother's life, my sisters and I cannot imagine how she was able to support a family of 7-8 people in such difficult circumstances with just the sound of her guitar," Mr. Binh said emotionally.
Despite the hardship, artist Thai Thi Lien still fulfills her role as a mother. "Until now, we still remember clearly the lullabies our mother sang when we were young," said Mr. Tran Thanh Binh.
Sharing about his childhood memories with People's Artist Dang Thai Son, Mr. Binh said: "Uncle Son was my mother's favorite child. He was often given priority, and we had to try to be good and line up so that she could clean our ears.
Later, she went abroad to live mainly with Uncle Son. It was not until 10 years before she passed away that we were able to take care of her when she returned to Vietnam. At the age of 90, my mother still reminds me to take my medicine every day."
According to Mr. Tran Thanh Binh, The sound of the guitar still resonates forever, meaning to honor her guitar sound, not only lasting forever in people's hearts but also continuing to resonate through successive generations of students.
Architect Tran Thanh Binh also said that the theme image of the music night is the image of Ms. Thai Thi Lien sitting next to the piano, chosen from the music night "Hundred Golden Autumns" in 2017.
Seven years ago, in the performance program "One Hundred Golden Autumns" to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam National Academy of Music, Ms. Thai Thi Lien stepped onto the stage when she turned 100 years old.
She refused to use a wheelchair and walked onto the stage herself, bowing to the audience with great difficulty. She told her children at the time that this would probably be her last time performing on stage. Her performance has now been viewed more than 7 million times across social media platforms.
