Kon Tum: 6 consecutive earthquakes occurred in Kon Plong district

The latest earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 occurred at 12:32:38 on April 4 (Hanoi time) with coordinates 14.790 degrees North latitude - 108.275 degrees East longitude, focal depth of about 8.1km; natural disaster risk level 0.

The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, Institute of Earth Sciences (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) said that 6 consecutive earthquakes occurred in Kon Plong district (Kon Tum) with magnitudes ranging from 2.6 to 3.4.

The latest earthquake with magnitude 3.4 occurred at 12:32:38 on April 4 (Hanoi time) with coordinates 14.790 degrees North latitude - 108.275 degrees East longitude, focal depth of about 8.1km; natural disaster risk level 0.

The following earthquakes all had a risk level of 0. Specifically, at 11:31:23, a magnitude 3.4 earthquake occurred; at 11:57:14, a magnitude 2.7 earthquake occurred; at about 12:16:10, a magnitude 3.4 earthquake occurred; at 12:27:51, another magnitude 3.0 earthquake occurred; and at 12:32:38, a magnitude 3.4 earthquake occurred. The focal depth of all 6 of these earthquakes was about 8.1-8.2 km.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh - Director of the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, Institute of Earth Sciences, said that all 6 of these earthquakes were stimulated earthquakes, with a natural disaster risk level of 0 (no damage).

Currently, the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center - Institute of Earth Sciences is continuing to monitor this earthquake.

From April 2021 to now, hundreds of earthquakes have occurred in Kon Tum, concentrated in Kon Plong district, in which the earthquakes caused widespread tremors.

The largest was the earthquake that occurred at noon on July 28, 2024 with a magnitude of 5.0.

"Induced earthquakes" are the cause of earthquakes in recent years in Kon Tum province.

According to preliminary studies, earthquakes in Kon Tum are expected to continue in the coming time, but are unlikely to be greater than 5.5 magnitude.

"However, it is still necessary to immediately carry out more detailed studies to assess earthquake activity in this area," Mr. Xuan Anh commented./.
