Timely rescue of rare 'lost' Javan pangolin and mountain turtle

This afternoon, March 22, the Hue City Forest Protection Department announced that the Huong Thuy Town Forest Protection Department has just received a number of rare wild animals discovered, rescued and handed over by local people to be released into the natural environment.

On the same day, Huong Thuy Town Forest Protection Department received from Mr. Bui Ngoc Khanh (residing in Ha village, Duong Hoa commune, Huong Thuy town, Hue city) a rare individual of mountain tortoise (scientific name Manouria impressa).

Mr. Bui Ngoc Khanh handed over a rare mountain tortoise to the forest rangers.

This mountain tortoise was discovered by Mr. Khanh while clearing his family's planted forest on March 21, so he rescued it. Mr. Khanh then reported the incident to the Huong Thuy Town Forest Protection Department to hand it over.

Upon inspection, the mountain tortoise weighed 2.2 kg and was in good health. This is a rare and endangered wild animal in group IIB, regulated for protection under Decree 06/2019/ND-CP of the Government on Management of endangered, rare and precious forest plants and animals.

Officers of Huong Thuy Town Forest Protection Department received a Java pangolin from Mr. Nguyen Huu Thao.

Previously, Mr. Nguyen Huu Thao (residing in Thuy Phuong ward, Huong Thuy town) discovered a Java pangolin (scientific name Manis javanica, an animal listed as critically endangered according to the IUCN Red Book, group IB) straying into his garden.

Because he was informed about wildlife protection, Mr. Thao reported to the hotline of the Huong Thuy Town Forest Protection Department to hand over this rare animal, then released it back into the wild.
