BHG - Shifting from small-scale farming, many households in Quang Binh district have boldly invested in expanding their scale, applying new techniques in livestock and poultry farming towards commodities, contributing to improving income, creating jobs and promoting sustainable rural economic development.

Xuan Giang commune has 2 pig and buffalo farming chains and 2 community livelihood projects for raising goats and pigs. At the same time, there are 8 chicken farming models with a scale of 500 - 7,000 heads; 3 breeding sow farming models; 3 pork farming models with 50 heads or more, bringing an average income for households of 150 - 750 million VND/year. The total herd of buffaloes and cows is nearly 1,000 heads; the herd of goats is 600 heads; the herd of pigs is 4,254 heads; the herd of poultry is more than 94,000 heads. With great livestock breeding strengths, the commune encourages households to participate in implementing scientific and methodical livestock farming chains, proactively preparing good breeds, food sources and preventing and controlling diseases to increase economic value.

The pig farming model of Mr. Le Quang Huy's family, Moi village, Xuan Giang commune is considered one of the typical economic development models. Starting in 2019 with just under 10 pigs, he gradually expanded the scale to dozens of commercial pigs per litter. The barn is built semi-industrial, has a waste treatment system, ensuring environmental hygiene. The feed used in farming is bran mixed with corn flour and probiotics, helping the pigs grow well and the meat quality is delicious. Currently, each year he sells about 18 - 20 tons of live pigs, earning a profit of more than 200 million VND. Not only that, he has also become an agent specializing in providing bran, serving the farming needs of people in the area.

Like many other women, Ms. Hoang Thi Quyet boldly joined the chicken farming livelihood group in Tan An village, Yen Binh town. Through the project's support capital and technical training courses, she gradually mastered knowledge about breed selection, chicken care and household economic management skills. Initially, she tested raising 100 native black chickens. This is a breed of chicken with good resistance, nutritious meat, delicious, soft and sweet, the selling price is often higher than some other types of chicken and is favored by the market. With the motto "Take short-term to raise long-term", when she had revolving capital, she continued to invest in expanding the scale to 700 chickens, deducting expenses for a profit of 30 million VND, thanks to which Ms. Quyet's family's life is getting better every day.

In recent times, Quang Binh district has issued and effectively implemented support mechanisms for livestock development in the direction of farms and family farms, associated with building product value chains. Vaccination and disease control have been implemented synchronously, preventing major epidemics. The district has also actively applied science and technology, artificial insemination, improving the stature and physical condition of buffalo and cow herds. In addition to the models, the district advocates developing multi-sector household economies, creating regular income, suitable to land conditions and production levels of the people. Up to now, the whole district has nearly 19,000 buffalo and cows; 11,000 goats; more than 54,000 pigs and 815,000 poultry. The proportion of livestock value accounts for about 40% in the agricultural and forestry production structure.
