Many international architecture awards have named Vietnam recently.
New season heavy hand
The 2024 Asia Architecture Design Awards (AADA) ceremony has just taken place in Bangkok (Thailand) with the participation of many architects, designers, experts in the fields of architecture, real estate... from 12 countries and territories. The jury, including experts, scholars, and influential people from Singapore, Thailand, Italy, and the UAE... selected 55 winning works. Of these, Vietnam won 8/55 awards in 7/20 categories. The Vietnamese works that have just been honored at AADA include: the Vietnam National Innovation Center project (Best Commercial Building Architectural Design in Asia); Dahwa Resort Quy Nhon (Best Landscape Design in Asia); Nam Me Kitchen & Bar (Best F&B Interior Design in Asia); Garrya Da Nang Hotel (Best Hotel Architectural Design in Asia); Border House (Best Residential Architectural Design in Asia); C8A (Best Architectural Design in Asia, Conceptual, Ongoing Project); À La Carte Ha Long Bay (Best Hotel Interior Design in Asia); Apache Footwear VN Research and Development Center (Best Workplace Interior Design in Asia).
The Vietnam National Innovation Center project (in Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park, Hanoi) won the award for Best Commercial Building Architectural Design in Asia, presented by the 2024 Asian Architecture Awards (AADA).

Architect Tan Quee Peng, Head of the AADA 2024 Jury, shared that the judges highly appreciated the Vietnamese works in this award both in terms of ideas and the way the architects implemented the works. Accordingly, the National Innovation Center with the idea of an eagle spreading its wings, represents confidence and ambition for innovation. The project combines green gardens and uses solar panels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Nam Me Kitchen & Bar project is a unique cultural highlight when inspired by the winding Mekong River. The combination of culinary experiences in a space symbolizing life and local lifestyle impressed the judges. Or Dhawa Resort Quy Nhon brings the idea of building native flora into the architectural design, cleverly showing off the beautiful natural scenery of Vietnam's sea, which is also a unique project... Not long ago, Nghinh Phong Tower Square won 2 international awards: World's Leading City Tourism Project and Asian Urban Landscape Award. Another work of Vietnamese architecture: Dao Mau Museum received the Moira Gemmill International Architecture Award. According to Architect Doan Thanh Ha, an architect who has received architectural awards in the UK, US, Türkiye..., the series of "award seasons" in Vietnam has actually been going on for decades.

According to Architect Doan Thanh Ha, since Architect Vo Trong Nghia won many awards in the period 2006 - 2010, the number of awards began to be consistent. In the next 5 years, many architectural offices also won awards such as a21 studio, H&P Architects, 1+1>2. Later, Tropical space and O architecture offices were recognized. In the last 5 years, the number of awards has also increased significantly and more regularly.
Super potential market with unique aesthetic taste
Architect Tan Quee Peng (RSP VN) shared: "In recent years, the Vietnamese architecture industry has developed remarkably in both scale and quality when a series of Vietnamese projects and architects appeared consecutively on specialized news sites, winning many international awards". As for AADA, in the past two seasons, many applications from Vietnamese units have been received.

Looking back at international architectural awards, we can see the imprint of the indigenous cultural flow as well as the green trend. The Dao Mau Museum was built in a perennial fruit garden. Many tiles were purchased from ancient houses, and the collection of this large amount of building materials was a miracle. Meanwhile, the works of architect Doan Thanh Ha bring a different language to bamboo. Bamboo is used by him with ancient techniques such as soaking in water, then put into construction to maximize the use of indigenous materials. Meanwhile, Nam Me Kitchen & Bar, according to its "father" architect Nguyen Nhu Y, clings to the deep connection between people and nature, with many imprints from Sa Dec to Saigon - Cho Lon, on a river boat. Another interesting point is the parallel of investors with architects. Remember, before the Dao Mau Museum, architect Nguyen Ha had an exhibition displaying the designs and architectural models that she created but could not reach the destination. Among them, there are investors who, after seeing the design, absolutely do not say a word, just keep silent and... disappear. "The appearance of more smart investors is also a significant thing for Vietnamese architecture", an architect shared.

Architect Tan Quee Peng also assessed that Vietnamese architecture has its own unique identity, not mixed with any other country. That makes the works of Vietnamese architects special. According to him, Vietnamese architects know how to take advantage of the unique features of traditional culture, bringing the spirit of a resilient nation with a long history into their works. "They also have their own unique personalities, applying advanced technologies, respecting nature and creativity. Thanks to that, Vietnamese architecture has broken through limits and crossed borders to the world. In short, I see Vietnam as a potential market with many talented architects, possessing talented hands, creativity and unique aesthetic taste," said Mr. Tan Quee Peng.
Judge of many international architectural competitions
Architect Hoang Thuc Hao, Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Architects, said that recently, Vietnamese architects have received more and more invitations to be judges in international architectural competitions. He personally has been a judge in competitions of the International Union of Architects (UIA), as well as competitions of many other international associations of architects in Europe and Asia. Most recently, Mr. Hao was a judge at the World Architecture Festival held in Singapore. Architect Doan Thanh Ha, H&P Architects, said that this was the first time he was invited to be a judge in an international architectural competition after winning the competition last season. Most recently, he was a judge for the RIBA architecture award of the Royal Institute of British Architects. In this award with clear and strict criteria, Mr. Ha was invited to be a judge twice in 2021 and 2024. Architect Nguyen Hoang Manh, MIA Design Studio, also took on the role of judge of the Tiny House International Architecture Competition 2022. Having won many international architecture awards, Architect Manh was also the main speaker at seminars and talks on green architecture at Thammasat University (Thailand) and the Malaysian Institute of Architecture.
