Encourage prestigious US universities to open branches in Vietnam

On March 31, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc had a working session with 21 US higher education institutions led by Mr. Steve Green, Deputy Ambassador of the United States to Vietnam.

Vietnamese students rank 5th in the world in the number of international students in the United States.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc said: 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States. The two sides have cooperated in many different fields, including education and training. Currently, according to statistics, there are about 200,000 Vietnamese citizens studying abroad and more than 30,000 in the United States. In the 2022-2023 school year, the number of Vietnamese students ranked 5th in the world in terms of the number of international students in the United States and increased by 5.7%.

Recently, Vietnam and the United States have signed agreements and memorandums of understanding with cooperation agreements in the field of education and training related to issues such as digital transformation, teaching English in educational institutions, improving testing capacity, education quality capacity in schools, etc. "That shows that the cooperative relationship between the two countries is increasingly good, towards sustainable development," the Deputy Minister commented.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Phuc emphasized that digital transformation is one of the priority strategies in Vietnam to best implement the activities of the education sector. This aims to strongly innovate the method of organizing education, making teaching and learning in the digital environment an essential, daily educational activity for every teacher and learner.

To successfully implement digital transformation, according to the Deputy Minister, in addition to investing in and upgrading digital infrastructure, platform systems, software, and databases, it is necessary to pay special attention to issues such as training and fostering teachers, developing STEM/STEAM education, developing programming thinking, implementing appropriate computer science programs, introducing universal digital skills and network safety and security content... to develop high-tech human resources, especially in some areas of big data, artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors...

The Deputy Minister hopes that cooperation between US and Vietnamese universities will be enhanced to implement joint training programs, coordinate training, and encourage prestigious universities to open branches in Vietnam.

Discussing strengthening cooperation in training technical fields such as AI, information technology, semiconductor chips

Thanking the Ministry of Education and Training for the warm welcome given to the delegation members, Mr. Steve Green, Deputy Ambassador of the United States to Vietnam, said: The United States currently has nearly 4,000 universities and colleges with nearly 20 million students, of which private schools account for more than 50%.

Since late 2024, the US Department of State has coordinated with the Ministry of Education and Training to invite 25 leaders of universities training in science, technology and engineering to attend the International Academic Exchange Program (IAPP), focusing on discussing enhancing cooperation in training in technical fields such as AI, information technology, and semiconductor chips.

Currently, there are about 50/400 joint training programs between Vietnamese and US higher education institutions, mainly bachelor and master training programs. The main fields of focus are engineering technology, computers and economics. In addition, there are direct cooperation activities between Vietnamese and US higher education institutions in areas such as science - technology, environment and climate change, agriculture, STEM education.

Since 2009, the Ministry of Education and Training has sent a total of about 127 people to study for doctoral degrees in the United States through Project 911 and about 30,000 Vietnamese students are studying in the United States under other scholarship programs and self-funded.

Currently in Vietnam there are 6 educational institutions with US investment capital in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong and Binh Duong with a total of about 3,000 students studying.

At the meeting, representatives of Vietnamese and US universities discussed issues related to training programs, joint programs, scholarships, international students, training majors to meet the needs and new trends of society, etc.
