According to Dr. Do Lan Anh, Department of Traditional Medicine - Tuyen Quang Provincial General Hospital, peripheral facial nerve palsy is a disease that people often call "stroke".
The disease has many causes, but about 75% of cases are due to sudden cold (directly affecting the 7th cranial nerve, causing peripheral facial paralysis). In addition, the disease is also caused by complications of various injuries, such as: skull trauma in the temporal region, mastoid bone, frequent ear, nose and throat infections that are not completely treated.
When going out in the cold, people need to keep their bodies warm to prevent disease.
Peripheral facial nerve palsy often occurs in winter, especially on days when the weather suddenly turns cold. The disease has symptoms such as: waking up in the morning and suddenly feeling numbness on one side of the face, difficulty moving (the face is droopy, unusually stiff), difficulty laughing and talking, the mouth is crooked to one side, the eyes cannot be closed, pain in the ear, headache, loss of taste, increased tears and salivation... The disease causes facial deformity, affects the ability to live and communicate daily, difficulty expressing emotions on the face, difficulty in eating and drinking, and importantly, affects the patient's aesthetics when communicating.
If treated early, it will be highly effective. If the patient comes to the hospital for treatment later, the function of the facial muscles will be difficult to recover, the treatment will only help partially, but will still leave sequelae such as: crooked mouth, eyes not closing tightly, and food spillage.
People with low immunity and flu are most susceptible to illness. Especially those who drink alcohol and often go out early and come home late are susceptible to cold winds.
Treatment of peripheral facial nerve palsy can apply methods such as: acupuncture, massage - acupressure, hydroacupuncture, infrared light therapy...
Doctor Do Lan Anh, Department of Traditional Medicine - Tuyen Quang Provincial General Hospital
Doctor Do Lan Anh noted: To prevent peripheral facial nerve palsy, adults and children should wear masks when going out, keep their forehead, head, face, and neck warm to avoid direct contact with cold wind; limit being outdoors in cold weather when the temperature is low and always keep the body warm. When lying in a warm blanket or indoors, when going out, you need to wear a warm coat. You should take a warm bath, in a closed room and bathe quickly. Avoid taking a cold bath and absolutely do not bathe late at night because the body is very susceptible to cold.
At the same time, each person needs to improve the body's resistance by exercising regularly; eating enough nutrients, increasing green vegetables, ripe fruits, drinking orange juice, lemon juice or supplementing with synthetic vitamin C.
When there are signs of facial paralysis, you need to go to a medical facility immediately for early examination and treatment, and also to diagnose and rule out other dangerous diseases that can cause facial paralysis such as: traumatic brain injury, stroke, brain tumor, shingles...
