Many farmers still burn rice straw after harvesting.

Burning rice straw after harvesting is a long-standing practice among farmers. Many believe this method helps eliminate pathogens and replenish nutrients in the soil.

In fact, burning rice straw can kill some insects that take refuge on the straw, clearing the soil of pathogens for the next crop; at the same time, farmers can utilize the ash after burning to provide some fertilizer, increasing soil fertility.

However, according to experts, burning rice straw in the fields disrupts the ecological balance, and if done for many consecutive years, it can cause the soil to become barren and infertile. In addition, the burning process generates a large amount of smoke, causing air pollution and affecting human life.

In particular, burning straw increases the risk of wildfires spreading, especially during hot weather like the present.

Straw has many benefits, such as mulching crops and vegetables, growing mushrooms, feeding livestock, or processing into organic fertilizer. Besides selling dry straw, farmers can also plow it under to allow it to decompose naturally, improving soil structure. Therefore, farmers need to choose useful alternatives to burning straw after rice harvest, contributing to the development of green and sustainable agriculture .
