Do not be subjective about diseases in livestock and poultry

Immediately after receiving information about the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Thach Thanh district, Ms. Ha Thi Yen, Minh Tien commune (Ngoc Lac) was extremely worried because this year, her family decided to invest in buying more piglets to increase the herd. After being instructed by the commune veterinary officer on disease prevention and control measures, especially after re-herding, Ms. Yen invested in building an additional barn to separate the piglets. According to her: “Before introducing the piglets to the herd, I applied the dry raising method, did not bathe the pigs; used biological bedding products; increased vitamin supplementation for piglets and fully vaccinated them. In addition, I minimized outsiders entering the barn area and periodically sprayed disinfectant around the livestock area; cleaned the feeders, waterers and equipment, tools and vehicles used in daily livestock farming... To enhance prevention of foot and mouth disease, I sprinkled lime powder on the paths, barn doors... to reduce the spread of pathogens; disinfected drinking water sources and killed flies, mosquitoes, rats... to limit the spread of disease”.

For Minh Tien commune, a locality with a large number of GSGC households, about 500 households, from the beginning of the year, with complicated weather developments and warnings about the disease situation in the livestock industry, the People's Committee of the commune has stepped up propaganda on loudspeakers, village meetings... on implementing disease prevention and control measures, advising livestock farmers not to be subjective and negligent, and to strictly apply them to avoid losses in the production process. In addition, the first round of vaccination must be strictly implemented. From the beginning of the year, the commune has also reviewed and made preliminary statistics of the GSGC herd, a list of household owners to proactively coordinate closely with the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine to strictly implement disease prevention and control measures according to regulations; strengthen monitoring and early detection of outbreaks.

In Cam Thuy district, to prevent epidemics in livestock, the district has directed units, communes and towns to strengthen propaganda to raise people's awareness of disease prevention and control; conduct the first vaccination in 2025 and supplementary vaccination for newly emerged GSGC herds that have not been vaccinated in the main phase. Along with that, strictly implement the management and control of slaughtering activities, transportation and circulation of animals and animal products in and out of the area; livestock households need to have appropriate care and feeding regimes to increase the resistance of livestock, regularly clean and disinfect barns to prevent epidemics.

Since the beginning of the year, with dangerous outbreaks, the whole country has been forced to destroy over 18,926 poultry and 5,200 pigs; especially 20 people have died from rabies in 13 provinces... In Thanh Hoa, an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has appeared in Thach Binh commune (Thach Thanh). Although the locality and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine quickly implemented urgent measures to localize, control and prevent the epidemic in time, this is also a "bell" warning livestock farmers to still be subjective, not actively cooperating in vaccination and confinement when sick. In the coming time, severe heat combined with heavy rains causing sudden climate changes is an ideal environment for pathogens to circulate and develop. Therefore, the risk of disease is always present and can break out at any time, requiring localities not to be negligent, subjective, and must have effective prevention measures. According to the Thanh Hoa Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, livestock farmers need to have a plan to develop herds in line with production and consumption potential; should not re-herd massively, especially in livestock facilities where epidemics have occurred in previous years. In addition, localities need to speed up the vaccination progress of the first phase of 2025, ensuring that at least 80% of the total existing livestock are vaccinated, especially against dangerous diseases such as rabies, avian influenza, foot-and-mouth disease, etc. Along with that, drastic, synchronous, and effective solutions for disease prevention and control; assign forces to proactively deploy disease surveillance to villages; do not let the arrangement of local organizations and apparatus affect the work of disease prevention, control and control. Localities need to pay attention to and guide people to raise livestock in the direction of biosafety; promote the construction of disease-free livestock facilities and areas. At the same time, arrange funds to fully prepare means, materials, tools, disinfectants, lime powder, vaccines... Above all, breeders must regularly raise awareness and responsibility about the risk of disease outbreaks and disease prevention and control measures; do not panic and always proactively apply disease prevention measures on GSGC herds.
