PREPARING FLOWERS FOR TET
There are still more than 2 months left until the Lunar New Year of At Ty 2025. However, the yard of more than 2,000 square meters of Ms. Doan Thi Nhat Duyen's household in Son Long quarter, Son Giang ward has been filled with hundreds of flower pots of about 10 types. The most common are marigolds, large chrysanthemums, crystal chrysanthemums, mini chrysanthemums and dahlias. With many years of experience in the profession, Ms. Duyen hopes to provide the market with beautiful, quality flower pots, contributing to making the spring picture in her homeland more brilliant.
The chrysanthemum pots of Ms. Doan Thi Nhat Duyen's family are about 40cm tall.
Ms. Duyen said that to have beautiful flower pots, from the middle of the 8th lunar month, her family arranged the pots in rows, then planted flowers and used organic fertilizer to take care of them. After more than 2 months, under her meticulous care, the flower plants are lush, about 40cm tall. The pots are all covered with windproof nets to prevent the plants from falling. The flower plants are in the stage of strong growth, with lush green leaves, so there are many worms and mealybugs. Therefore, Ms. Duyen periodically sprays biological pesticides.
At the foot of Ba Ra Mountain, the year-round cool climate is a favorable condition for the development of flower growing. For many years, flower growing has brought jobs and stable income to the people here. The family of Mr. Doan Manh Chuc in Son Long quarter has been involved in flower growing for many years. Mr. Chuc said that this year his family planted 1,000 pots of chrysanthemums of various types, including crystal chrysanthemums, large-flowered chrysanthemums, 7-color rubies and sakura. On average, from planting to selling flowers on the market, it takes from 3.5 to 4 months. According to Mr. Chuc, being proactive in all aspects of production, farmers will overcome any risks. “Every job has its own joys, the more you understand flowers, the more passionate you will be about taking care of them. During the day, I fertilize, water, and weed, and at night I have to turn on the lights to help the flowers grow tall. When I look at the flowers, I feel like life is full of fun,” Mr. Chuc shared.
FLEXIBILITY IN PRODUCTION
In Son Long field, in addition to growing rice, the soil here is also suitable for growing short-term crops. Depending on the time, farmers can grow flowers or vegetables, tubers, and fruits, so the field is always bustling with people working in production. The green color of vegetables and fruits is always covered.
People continuously rotate short-term crops to get rich on Son Long field.
Mr. Truong Van Thong, Head of the Professional Group for Short-term Crop Production in Son Long Ward, said: This year, considering the economic situation during Tet, there are many difficulties, so in the professional group, about 50% of members grow flowers, the rest mostly grow cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, and bitter melons. Flower growers also have very careful calculations. If in previous years, the economy developed, people spent a lot of money on Tet flowers, flower growers invested in large quantities. However, this year, the expected consumption is not high, so most people reduce the quantity by 10-15%, and at the same time grow many different types to prevent risks.
Mr. Truong Van Thong's family planted about 10,000 flowers to prepare for the 2025 Tet holiday.
With such an assessment, in about a week, Mr. Thong's family will plant about 10,000 marigolds, Da Lat chrysanthemums and some other types, 3,000 plants less than previous crops. Mr. Thong calculated: "On average, 1 sao of land grows about 7,000 plants, farmers will spend about 10 million VND, including seeds, pesticides, and fertilizers. If selling at the lowest price of 5,000 VND/plant, growers will make a profit of about 20 million VND/sao. However, the market always has unpredictable risks, so farmers need to be flexible in production."
Son Long Ward currently has 24 member households of the flower and lagim tree growing cooperative with a total area of about 4 hectares. To help people stabilize production, the ward has consulted with all levels to invest in an internal irrigation system. However, currently, households all draw electricity from their family meters to the production site, which is both a waste of electricity, high cost and potentially unsafe. Therefore, we are recommending that the relevant agencies soon invest in a power grid system to meet the demand, helping people stabilize and sustain production. Ms. VO THI KIM PHUONG, Chairman of People's Committee of Son Giang Ward, Phuoc Long Town |
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thuc, agricultural extension collaborator, Phuoc Long Town Agricultural Service Center said: Thanks to the cool weather and climate at the foot of Ba Ra Mountain, agricultural production is relatively favorable, each season has its own produce. However, the agricultural land fund is limited, so farmers have to continuously rotate crops. To achieve productivity and quality of agricultural products, farmers have to invest a lot of fertilizer. Therefore, production costs also increase. In recent years, with the attention of Phuoc Long Town Farmers' Association and Son Giang Ward People's Committee, households in the professional association have been organized to visit short-term crop production models in general and flowers in particular in Sa Dec City, Dong Thap Province and some other localities, helping people have the opportunity to learn experiences and effective methods to apply. Therefore, the lives of farmers in the neighborhood are increasingly stable.
