Disease due to lack of proper diet and exercise

The 3rd Vietnam Community Nutrition Day with the theme "Youth of the capital - healthy to protect the Fatherland", aiming to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the capital's liberation day, was organized by the Health and Life Newspaper (Ministry of Health) today, September 21, in Hanoi.

Nutritionists advise people to maintain a reasonable weight, have a suitable diet and exercise regimen to prevent chronic diseases.

According to the Ministry of Health, the Government has approved the National Strategy for protecting, caring for and improving people's health until 2030, with a vision to 2045 (strategy).

The strategy sets out specific targets for implementing a diverse, reasonable diet and food security for all ages and all subjects throughout the life cycle; improving the nutritional status of mothers, children and adolescents. The target is that by 2030, the average height of 18-year-olds by gender will increase by 2 - 2.5 cm for men; and 1.5 - 2 cm for women, compared to 2020.

The strategy also sets out targets for controlling overweight and obesity, preventing chronic non-communicable diseases, and related risk factors in children, adolescents and adults.

Specifically, for children under 5 years old, this rate is below 10% (under 11% in urban areas and under 7% in rural areas); children 5 - 18 years old are below 19% (under 27% in urban areas and under 13% in rural areas).

Adults aged 19 - 64 years overweight and obesity rate is below 20% (urban areas below 23% and rural areas below 17%) by 2025; and maintained at that level until 2030.

Eating lots of green vegetables is good for your health.

According to Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan, life has improved a lot, we are no longer worried about having enough to eat but are worried about eating just enough. In reality, the rate of overweight and obesity is still increasing, mostly due to not knowing how to eat just enough, not having a suitable exercise regimen.

Mr. Thuan assessed that many people are not interested in practicing scientific nutrition and proper physical exercise. Therefore, Vietnam Community Nutrition Day contributes to spreading the spirit of scientific nutrition and proper physical exercise to the public.

Grow taller and maintain good health

Consulting at the Community Nutrition Day, doctors noted that to control weight, first of all, one needs to have a healthy, active lifestyle, a balanced diet between energy intake and energy expenditure during the day.

In addition, it is necessary to follow the recommendations well: eat lots of green vegetables, fruits, whole grains; limit foods and drinks high in sugar; do not smoke, increase physical activity: walk, play sports; maintain appropriate exercise and physical activity at least 3 times a week, at least 30 minutes each time.

For young children, to reach maximum height when they grow up, families and schools need to help children have the space and time to increase physical activity.

Children should be encouraged to participate in sports such as walking, running, jumping rope, soccer, badminton, shuttlecock, swimming; children should be guided to live an active life, participate in housework: cleaning the house, carrying water to water the plants...

Along with a reasonable diet, increasing physical activity is effective in helping children grow taller and maintain good health.

Dr. Nguyen Trong Hung, Head of the Department of Adult Nutrition Examination and Consultation, National Institute of Nutrition, said that within the framework of the 3rd Vietnam Community Nutrition Day program, he examined about 50 people, mainly middle-aged and elderly people and children.

For adults, the most common diseases are diabetes, blood pressure, overweight and bone and joint diseases; for children, obesity.
