No one has the right to tear this map into two pieces. Last post: Let's continue writing history, not rewriting history.

On April 30, 1975, after a long journey of thousands of miles, the Vietnamese people were free of enemies.

“Thirty years, a long resistance war/ We have gone. And we have arrived/ Here we are, happiness in hand/ Independence - Freedom, from now on forever” . The Vietnamese people, not only those present on the battlefield, those in the rear, the children of the South who gathered “Have passed, the pain of being in the South at night and in the North during the day/ In the middle of the homeland, but like a life of exile” .

General Van Tien Dung assessed: "The complete and total victory of the General Offensive and Uprising in the Spring of 1975 was the greatest and most glorious victory in the thousands of years of history of building and defending the country of our people, opening a new era full of promise for our Fatherland."

“We are not made of steel”

On his personal page, the son of the late General Secretary Le Duan quoted his father's words: "We stand firm not because we are made of iron and steel, because no iron and steel can withstand the heat of bombs and bullets, but because we are human beings of flesh and blood who love our Fatherland passionately."

Youtube platform these days in April has appeared many video clips of the supreme leaders during the resistance war against America to save the country. Among them is a video recording General Vo Nguyen Giap answering the press interview, quoted verbatim:

“Right during the days of the Dalat Conference, I knew that France intended to occupy the South and separate it from Vietnam. Therefore, in a week, just discussing the agenda was not enough. One day, I stood up and spoke, I declared that the South is the blood of the blood, the flesh of the flesh of Vietnam. As long as the South has not returned to the heart of the Fatherland, the Vietnamese people will continue to fight. When Uncle Ho returned from France (1946), we knew the situation was very difficult.

Mr. Dinh Khac Mai (sitting in the middle) tells the young generation about the past resistance war.

We want peace but it is difficult. The resistance war against America, we had to pay a very high price, both military and civilian, we sacrificed millions of people. But unity and independence are more precious than that sacrifice. Therefore, now we also owe a debt to the heroes and martyrs who sacrificed to make Vietnam independent, free and bring happiness to the people.

I visited some big countries and they advised me to keep the North, and the South… for another 100 years. The leaders of the big countries asked me, you said you were going to fight the Americans, so how many tank and aircraft divisions do you have? I replied, if I fought your way, I would only be able to fight for two hours, but if I fought our way, we would win. "Fighting our way" as the General said, is people's war.

The characters from different classes appearing in this series also clearly explained the nature of people's war and the justice of the resistance war against America to save the country and gain the right to national self-determination.

In December 2024, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army, a group of reporters from Tay Ninh Newspaper had the opportunity to meet people from many places, they met on the battlefield in the South.

At that time (December 2024), Mr. Dinh Khac Mai, residing in Chau Thanh district, said: “I went quickly and urgently because the battlefield (in the South) needed people. We know how fierce the Quang Tri front was. I fought in Quang Tri from May to August 1972. After that, I went to Loc Ninh (now Binh Phuoc) to prepare to liberate Saigon.

21 years after the country was divided, the country was finally reunited. Unexpectedly, just a few years after the war against the US to save the country, the situation at the northern border had problems. My unit and I were sent to the north to prepare for the war to protect the northern border. The northern border temporarily calmed down, and Mr. Mai was present to protect the southwestern border and help our friend Cambodia.

Mr. Dinh Khac Mai (left cover) talks with Tay Ninh Newspaper reporters and young people.

Having gone through three different battlefields in three different periods, Mr. Mai shared: “We grew up during a time when the country was at war. The mission and duty of young people is to protect the country. We always have patriotism, to protect the country at any time, no matter how difficult or arduous. We both fought the enemy and studied to protect the country.

Over thirty years in the army, fighting in three different battlefields, three different periods, three different opponents, I have never once violated the discipline of the unit. I have received many medals and feel honored for that. I have a wish, compared to wartime, peacetime conditions are more favorable.

Military officers and young soldiers need to train well in all aspects to protect the country and the people. Let me add this, reporters who came to visit, I was surprised. Without this meeting, I would be like countless other soldiers, after the war, after military service, we would return to normal life, without any intention of showing off or boasting about this or that, absolutely not" - Mr. Mai said.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hung and his wife took a souvenir photo.

Also in December 2024, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hung (from Phu Tho, currently residing in Tan Chau district, Tay Ninh) said: “In 1966, when I was only 20 years old, I followed the call of Uncle Ho, the Party and the State, and applied to join the army to save the country. I joined Group 175 to the South.

We, more than 500 young men, set out for the southern battlefield. It took us exactly six and a half months to reach Binh Phuoc province, then called Phuoc Long province. One day, we suddenly saw a substance like a layer of mist covering the forests and our bodies.

We ran into the camp to find raincoats to put on, and got completely soaked. We had no idea that the mist was toxic chemicals. I was exposed to Agent Orange at that time. We used water from the Be River, and at that time we did not know that the water was contaminated.”

Mr. Nguyen Van Quynh (a character appearing in the third article of this series), mused, “No mathematical or physical quantity can measure the pain and loss of the resistance war. But honestly, we are extremely proud of those years. When my brothers and friends returned to the South to fight, they had only one wish: to drive out the enemy and unify the country, without comparing gains and losses.

Our generation is proud to have contributed our efforts and youth to the resistance war and to the cause of building the country. I have been retired for a long time but I always educate my children and grandchildren not to forget the difficult days and sacrifices of the nation. My family lost 6 people in a bomb attack, I understand the pain and cruelty of war.

Don't rewrite history.

"Times will pass, but the victory of our people in the resistance war against the US to save the country will forever be recorded in our national history as one of the most brilliant pages, a shining symbol of the complete victory of revolutionary heroism and human intelligence, and will go down in world history as a great feat of the 20th century, an event of great international importance and profound contemporary significance" - during his lifetime, General Secretary Le Duan made a summary statement about the greatness of the resistance war against the US to save the country.

Therefore, instead of wanting to review or “rethink history”, let’s continue writing the history of the Fatherland in peace and development. In the movie “The Upside Down Card Game”, the character Nguyen Thanh Luan (the prototype of strategic intelligence officer Pham Ngoc Thao) told the press and representatives of the US government in South Vietnam that “We accept bloodshed to end bloodshed forever”.

The young generation - the future owners of the country will continue to write the glorious history of the nation.

In 1969, not long before leaving the world, in a letter responding to a previous letter from US President Richard Nixon, President Ho Chi Minh continued to express his goodwill: “We, the Vietnamese people, love peace, a true peace in true independence and freedom... In the letter, you expressed your desire to act for a just peace. To do so, the United States must end its war of aggression and withdraw its troops from South Vietnam, respect the right to self-determination of the people of South Vietnam and of the Vietnamese nation, without foreign interference.”

Vietnam-US relations have gone through a sad chapter. However, as a legitimate aspiration of the people of the two countries, Vietnam-US relations, after decades of ups and downs, have opened a new chapter in the spirit of “No one can change the past, but the future depends on us”.
