The city of Zhaoyuan in China's Shandong province is making headlines for offering a 25kg gold bar worth more than 10 million yuan (US$1.5 million) to the first person who can lift it with one hand, the South China Morning Post reported.
The challenge was announced on the Douyin account (China's version of TikTok) of the Zhaoyuan City Culture and Tourism Bureau on May 3.
The challenge was initiated by Chi Yixian, head of the Zhaoyuan City Culture and Tourism Bureau. In the promotional video, Chi holds a gold block with both hands at the city's Gold Museum. 25 kilograms is equivalent to the weight of two standard car tires.
The video has so far attracted half a million likes and 100,000 comments, and is one of the latest promotional campaigns being used by cultural and tourism agencies across China to attract visitors.
Previously, tourism and cultural officials often appeared in videos on Douyin, playing the roles of local historical figures or ethnic minorities to attract domestic tourists.
Many netizens said the moves were quite refreshing, showing a friendlier side of Chinese officials.
Zhaoyuan City is famous for its gold mines and gold production. It is known as the "gold capital of China".
Zhao Yuan's promotional video showed some participants failing to lift the gold block during the challenge. Finally, an elderly man successfully lifted the gold block with one hand.
However, the video did not receive as much positive feedback as expected.
Some netizens questioned whether the elderly man had received his reward. The challenge's leader, Feng Lili, explained that the old man was lifting a cheap metal block that weighed only half as much as real gold.
Mr. Feng also explained that even if it was real gold, the old man would not be able to complete the strict requirements of the challenge.
Accordingly, challenge participants must lift a trapezoidal gold block with one hand, while keeping the larger side facing down and parallel to the surface of the exhibition booth for 25 seconds.
Mr Feng added that the challenge has existed since the museum opened in 2009 and no one has succeeded.
"Don't start a challenge if you can't afford the prize. Will anyone actually lift that gold?", one netizen commented.
Meanwhile, another person supported Zhaoyuan City: "The point is not to give away the gold block, but to let people see and feel it with their own eyes."
