Bilateral trade negotiations with the US begin

On the evening of April 23, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien had a phone call with US Trade Representative Jamieson L. Greer to officially launch negotiations on bilateral economic and trade issues between Vietnam and the US. The Foreign Market Development Department said this was an important meeting to discuss the principles, scope and roadmap of the negotiations.

During the phone call, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to developing the comprehensive strategic partnership with the US. The executive also wishes to promote economic and trade relations in a balanced, stable, sustainable and effective manner with this country.

The Trump administration has postponed high reciprocal tariffs on dozens of trading partners for 90 days, including Vietnam. The temporary tariff rate is 10%.

According to Mr. Dien, Vietnamese ministries and sectors are ready to negotiate and handle issues of concern to the US side, and together find reasonable solutions for mutual benefit, in the spirit of "harmonious interests and shared risks".

In response, US Trade Representative Jamieson L. Greer appreciated the two countries' agreement to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement. He believes that the two sides will soon reach appropriate solutions to promote stable and mutually beneficial economic and trade relations.

The two heads of negotiating delegations also agreed to maintain regular exchanges at the head of delegation and technical levels to speed up the negotiation process on each specific issue.
