This is the first year the competition has been launched in Vietnam. At the announcement ceremony, General Director of UOB Vietnam Victor Ngo and Mr. Ngo Tuan Phong, Deputy Director of the Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, announced the identity design of the competition. This design is inspired by the winning work of the Southeast Asia region in 2022, "Dystopia" by Thai artist Chomrawi Suksom.
ASEAN Regional Painting Competition “UOB Painting of the Year” Launched in Vietnam for the First Time
According to the Organizing Committee, the deadline for receiving entries is August 6, 2023. The Organizing Committee calls on artists from 5 ASEAN countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam to participate in the competition.
The jury consists of four people, including three Vietnamese people: Chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association Luong Xuan Doan, Head of the jury; visual artist Tran Luong, founder of the APD Center for Arts Promotion and Development, and PhD in Fine Arts Tia - Thuy Nguyen, founder of The Factory Contemporary Arts Center. The remaining member of the jury is Mr. Kwok Kian Chow, a special art advisor from Singapore.
According to artist Luong Xuan Doan, Chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association and Head of the Jury, the Jury will evaluate the entries based on criteria that respect the beauty of national cultural identity; the value of new messages; creativity and new expressive techniques. He hopes that through the competition, new contributions and new beauty of Vietnamese contemporary artists will be found...
The winning entries from the national competition will be announced and displayed at an exhibition open to the public in Ho Chi Minh City in October 2023.

There are two award categories (national and regional) for established and amateur artists. The top winner in Vietnam will receive a prize of VND500 million and the opportunity to compete in the Southeast Asia regional competition with a cash prize of S$13,000; and a one-month residency at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan.
The annual UOB Painting of the Year ASEAN regional painting competition was first held in 1982 to recognise the contributions of artists in the Southeast Asian region; providing them with the opportunity to showcase their works to the community.
The competition was later expanded to Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and in 2023 to Vietnam. It is the oldest art competition in Singapore and one of the most prestigious in Southeast Asia...
