This is the first year the competition has been launched in Vietnam. At the announcement ceremony, Victor Ngo, General Director of UOB Vietnam, and Mr. Ngo Tuan Phong, Deputy Director of the Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibitions, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, unveiled the competition's branding design. This design is inspired by the 2022 Southeast Asia regional award-winning work "Dystopia" by Thai artist Chomrawi Suksom.
The ASEAN regional painting competition “UOB Painting of the Year” has been launched for the first time in Vietnam.
According to the organizers, the deadline for submitting entries is August 6, 2023. The organizers are calling on artists from five ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, to participate in the competition.
The judging panel consisted of four members, including three Vietnamese: Luong Xuan Doan, President of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association and Head of the Judging Panel; visual artist Tran Luong, founder of the APD Center for Art Preservation and Development; and Dr. Tia-Thuy Nguyen, art historian and founder of The Factory Contemporary Art Center. The remaining member of the judging panel was Kwok Kian Chow, a special art advisor from Singapore.
According to artist Luong Xuan Doan, President of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association and Head of the Judging Panel, the judging panel will evaluate the entries based on criteria that prioritize the beauty of national cultural identity; the value of new messages; creativity; and new expressive techniques. He hopes that the competition will uncover new contributions and new artistic styles from contemporary Vietnamese artists...
The winning entries from the national competition will be announced and displayed at a public exhibition in Ho Chi Minh City in October 2023.

There are two award categories (national and regional) for established and amateur artists. The top winner in Vietnam will receive a prize of 500 million VND and the opportunity to compete at the Southeast Asia regional level for a cash prize of 13,000 Singapore dollars; and participate in a one-month residency program at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan.
The annual ASEAN Regional Painting Competition (UOB Painting of the Year) was first held in 1982 to recognize the contributions of artists in Southeast Asia and provide them with an opportunity to showcase their work to the community.
The competition was later expanded to Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and in 2023 to Vietnam. It is the oldest art competition in Singapore and one of the most prestigious in Southeast Asia...
