Recently, at 10 supermarkets of the Tops Market chain, the “Bring Your Own Shopping Bag” program, launched by Central Retail in Vietnam – a member of the Alliance of retailers reducing plastic bag consumption, has officially launched. This program is to respond to the spirit of International Day without plastic bags (July 3) and World Environment Day (June 5).
"Bring Your Own Bag" is one of Central Retail's outstanding corporate social responsibility activities in Vietnam in 2023, continuing the series of successes and positive reception from customers when participating in the No Plastic Bag Day program, which was piloted at Tops Market in 2022.
Through in-store activities and communication programs, Central Retail hopes to promote and raise awareness of environmental protection and positively inspire consumer habits when shopping at modern retail channels, at the same time being an important milestone on the Group's journey towards sustainable development and becoming a Green and Sustainable Retailer, responsible for the environment.
Accordingly, when shopping at 10 Tops Market supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Hai Phong and Can Tho on Wednesdays starting from June 7, customers will be encouraged to bring their own shopping bags. Consumers who bring their own bags with a bill of VND500,000 will receive a voucher worth VND20,000. In particular, customers who shop with a bill of VND350,000 or more for any P&G product will receive a reusable bag. On this day, customers can buy reusable bags at a discount of up to 40%.
Through this program, it is estimated that 32,000 plastic bags will be reduced in consumption per day at the Tops Market system.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Dieu Thuy, Director of the Plastic Reduction Program of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Vietnam, said that plastic pollution is a cross-sectoral issue that requires a comprehensive approach, with responsible contributions and coordination between managers, consumers and especially the private sector. Therefore, more effective models and programs from businesses and retailers - who play an important role in moving towards building a circular economy in plastic waste management on a national scale and eliminating plastic pollution comprehensively.
As a member of the Alliance of retailers reducing plastic bag consumption, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong, Director of Sustainable Development, Central Retail Group said that by organizing the event for 2 consecutive years, Central Retail Group hopes to create a habit for consumers to bring their own bags when shopping and hopes to contribute to raising awareness about reducing the use of plastic bags for the whole society, changing shopping behavior in a positive direction.
