"Humans have ancestors, like trees have roots, like rivers have sources. This is a precious tradition of generations of Vietnamese people, no matter where they live on this earth. Returning to the homeland is always a sacred sentiment, a burning aspiration of every Vietnamese citizen," Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chairwoman of the Committee for Vietnamese Nationalities and Overseas Vietnamese Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang said on the evening of July 16 at the opening ceremony of the Vietnam Summer Camp 2024.
This is an annual program held over the past 20 years to create conditions for the young generation of overseas Vietnamese from all over the world to return to the country to learn about the traditions, culture and history of the nation and to exchange and strengthen solidarity.
This year, the event had the participation of 120 outstanding overseas Vietnamese youth from 28 countries and territories with the theme "A Country Full of Joy", to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory, the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital, towards the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South, and the reunification of the country.
The overseas Vietnamese youth will travel together across the country from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, visiting scenic spots and historical sites such as Hoan Kiem Lake, Hue Imperial City, Hoi An, Uncle Ho's hometown of Sen Village, Reunification Palace as well as paying tribute to ancestors and national heroes at the National Ancestor Lac Long Quan Temple and Truong Son Cemetery.
The program has a variety of activities to help enhance exchanges between overseas Vietnamese youth and domestic youth; learn about the history, culture, and traditional customs of the nation; visit scenic spots, tangible and intangible culture of Vietnam.
"I hope that, through the useful and practical activities of the Summer Camp, Vietnamese youth and students abroad will promote patriotism, national pride and self-respect, maintain close relationships with their homeland and country, and work together with domestic youth to strive for an independent, democratic, unified and powerful Vietnam with a position and role in the region and the world," Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang emphasized, and welcomed the children living abroad who have returned to their homeland.
"Finding the beloved origin"
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Nguyen Khue An, 16, from the UK, expressed her pride in attending the Vietnam Summer Camp 2024 with 119 other delegates. Khue An emphasized that this demonstrates the spread and influence of Vietnamese culture around the world.
"There is nothing better than connecting with friends from all over the world but sharing the same beloved Vietnamese roots that our parents and grandparents always mentioned.
Many of us grew up in a country far from our homeland, far from the land that nurtured our blood, so this trip from North to South is an opportunity to visit our ancestral homeland, practice the Vietnamese language, and strengthen our understanding of Vietnamese history and culture," Khue An emphasized.
The delegates attending the program are children of overseas Vietnamese families who have contributed to the community and the homeland. The young people all have good academic achievements, have contributed to the youth, student or community movements towards their homeland and are aged 16-24.
This year, the event was first permitted by the Ministry of National Defense to open at the Military History Museum, Hanoi Flag Tower. In addition, the event also included activities to increase information about Vietnam's sovereignty over its seas and islands. For the first time, overseas Vietnamese youth will visit the Hoang Sa Museum, listen to talks about Vietnam's seas and islands, and interact with students of the Khanh Hoa Naval Academy.
