The moment a 1.5-ton Russian bomb attacked a Ukrainian unit

Video from a UAV shows a Russian FAB-1500 UMPK guided bomb crashing into a suspected Ukrainian troop concentration under a railway bridge in Kherson.

The Dnepro_Rub account, which specializes in posting documents about Russian forces on Telegram, on October 21 published a video of a FAB-1500 UMPK guided bomb attacking a concentration of Ukrainian soldiers at the foot of the railway bridge over the Dnieper River in Kherson province.

Video taken from a Russian drone shows a large fireball engulfing the bridge, sending up a column of smoke and debris. Part of the bridge's deck also collapsed due to the force of the explosion.

"The guided bomb hit the Ukrainian marines' assembly point under the bridge, even though they moved between the bridge pillars to hide their whereabouts. The entire unit was wiped out, and there was not even a radio call to evacuate the wounded after the attack," the account said.

The Russian Defense Ministry did not comment on the video, but on October 22 announced that it had successfully prevented Ukrainian reconnaissance groups from attempting to cross the Dnieper River, destroying a large amount of equipment and causing significant casualties among the enemy near the village of Stanislav.

Ukrainian officials have not commented on the above information.

FAB-1500 is a conventional bomb developed during the Soviet era with a mass of 1.5 tons, of which the explosive warhead weighs nearly 700 kg. Each bomb is capable of creating a crater 15 m in diameter, as well as destroying multiple targets with shrapnel and shock waves within a radius of 500 m.

The Unified Guidance Module and Lifting Wing (UMPK) consists of satellite navigation equipment, control systems and lifting wings, designed to significantly increase the bomb's accuracy and range. This is a similar solution to the US JDAM-ER series, helping to turn conventional bombs into precision-guided weapons, instead of having to produce specialized smart bombs at high costs.

Russia began using 250-500 kg conventional bombs equipped with UMPKs at the beginning of this year, posing a significant threat to Ukrainian units. In early September, a Russian fighter pilot's account Fighter Bomber reported that the FAB-1500 bomb equipped with UMPKs had entered combat for the first time, hitting targets in Ukraine with precision.

The pilot said that the manufacturer had to design a completely new UMPK system for the FAB-1500 bomb. "This is the longest-range UMPK-equipped bomb in Russia today," the Fighter Bomber account said.
