The above information was shared with Sputnik news agency by Mr. Alexander Amiragyan, Director of the Center for Fuel and Energy Economics of the Russian Center for Strategic Research .

In October 2022, after explosions on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed the idea of transferring Russia's lost gas shipments to the Black Sea region.

According to Mr. Putin, it is possible to build a gas hub in Türkiye - which will become a base for exporting to other countries, mainly Europe.

“The creation of such a hub will help Moscow export more pipeline gas and LNG to Ankara and Europe,” said Alexander Amiragyan.

This will also allow maintaining the current volume of gas supplies through Türkiye to Europe - where Russia has long-term contracts with Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, North Macedonia, Romania."

However, for political reasons, Europe may gradually reorient towards alternative suppliers, mainly due to increased LNG supplies to coastal countries in the region and additional gas supplies along the network.

“The center can disable the identification of the source of the gas sold. This means that in practice, the gas may come from Russia, but legally it will be purchased at the center and its origin will mean nothing to the buyer,” Amiragyan explained.

Russian gas giant Gazprom is not only able to maintain but also has the ability to increase gas pumping, he added.

There are currently two gas pipeline systems from Russia to Türkiye, BlueStream and Turkish Stream. Blue Stream has a design capacity of 16 billion cubic meters, while Turkish Stream has a design capacity of 31.5 billion cubic meters. Both pipelines are underutilized.

“Russia exported about 34 billion cubic meters of gas through these pipelines to Türkiye and Europe in 2022. If sanctions are imposed on Russian LNG in Europe, this Center can become a contributing solution to redirect supply routes,” the Director of the Center for Fuel and Energy Economics stated.
