On June 26, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the French Research Institute for Development organized an event to introduce the project "Research on the transport of materials from the mainland and their impacts on the environment and ecosystems of coastal waters in Vietnam".

Accordingly, continuing the joint research activities, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the French Research Institute for Development (IRD) have deployed a joint Vietnamese-French oceanographic survey in Vietnam's coastal waters, using the French scientific research vessel ANTEA starting in the Hai Phong - Quang Ninh waters and ending in the Tra Vinh - Soc Trang waters from May 28 to July 11, 2024.

This is a scientific activity within the framework of the project "Research on the transport of materials from the mainland and their impacts on the environment and ecosystems of coastal waters in Vietnam" (abbreviated as PLUME).

At the event, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Quan, Director of the Institute of Marine Resources and Environment - VAST, the host unit of the Vietnamese side of the survey, reviewed the journey of more than 20 years of cooperation between VAST-IRD in the field of marine resources and environment; the main research and training results of the 2014 joint survey between the two sides as the basis for implementing the 2024 survey.

Some data on marine physical processes, sediments, bio-geochemical and optical processes in coastal estuaries, and river plume were recently collected and updated by Dr. Marc Teddeti, Head of the IRD survey team and Dr. Vu Duy Vinh, Head of the VAST survey team at the meeting.

These long-term cooperation activities between VAST and IRD were highly appreciated by Ambassador Olivier Brochet, who expressed his intention to continue supporting the French Embassy in Vietnam and other relevant French organizations so that the two sides can smoothly carry out cooperation activities.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Tuan Anh, Vice President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, suggested that VAST and IRD scientists continue to closely coordinate, analyze, evaluate and share to further clarify the nature of the process of transporting organic substances from the mainland to coastal waters, build a scientific basis to create a premise for future research, contributing to solving the problem of sustainable management of resources and the coastal environment of Vietnam to serve socio-economic development.

After the event, the ANTEA ship and Vietnamese-French scientists continued to carry out research according to the licensed survey route, expected to complete and set sail back to France on July 12.
