On March 9, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee held the inauguration ceremony of the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro line (metro line 1) in the area above Ben Thanh station - September 23 Park.

This event took place after the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro line was put into commercial operation more than 2 months ago (December 22), on the occasion of the 10th Vietnam - Japan Festival, demonstrating the friendship between the two countries.

The Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro line is 19.7km long with 14 stations, connecting from the center of Ho Chi Minh City to Thu Duc City. It is the first underground section in the country, applying many modern and advanced construction methods.

The project uses ODA capital from the Japanese Government and domestic counterpart capital, and is a key economic cooperation project between the two governments of Vietnam and Japan.

After more than 2 months of completion and commercial operation, this metro line has served more than 5 million passengers and received positive feedback from the people.

At the ceremony, Mr. Furukawa Yasushi - Deputy Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Tourism and Transport of Japan recognized that the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro line is a symbol of new close cooperation in the railway sector between Vietnam and Japan.

He said that the Japanese Government has contributed to the metro line 1 construction project through ODA loans. During the construction process, Japanese enterprises have participated in construction and installation, providing locomotives and signaling systems.

"I know that Metro Line 1 opened in December last year, and many people were eager to come and experience the train. I am very happy that so many people are traveling on a train built with Japanese technology," said Mr. Furukawa Yasushi, adding that in the coming time, Japan will continue to support the operation and management of Metro Line 1 by sharing knowledge and experience, thereby strengthening cooperation with Vietnam to promote development in the urban railway sector.

Mr. Nguyen Van Duoc - Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee said that Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro is not only a modern transport project, of important significance to the socio-economic development of the city, but also a key economic cooperation project between Vietnam and Japan, which the Prime Ministers of the two countries agreed to prioritize promoting investment cooperation.

“Today’s inauguration ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter in the journey of developing modern urban transport. However, this is just the beginning, because the operation, management and exploitation of metro line 1 must ensure safety, efficiency and effectiveness, which are important factors that need special attention in the coming time,” the Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City emphasized.

He requested the Urban Railway Project Management Board and relevant authorities to pay close attention to this issue, have very specific and detailed plans and scenarios to proactively operate and exploit the key project, which has great significance for cooperation between the two countries Vietnam and Japan.
