Urgently handle cracks on temporary embankment to prevent landslides on Hieu river bank

This afternoon, September 21, information from Cam Lo District People's Committee said that after receiving information, cracks appeared on the temporary reinforcement section on the embankment to prevent landslides on the Hieu River bank through Moc Duc village, Cam Hieu commune. The locality promptly directed relevant departments to determine the cause, related responsibilities and remedial measures.

Accordingly, due to the impact of floods in 2023, the Hieu River bank through Moc Duc and Truong Xa villages, Cam Hieu commune suffered serious landslides with a length of about 0.5 km. Of which, the river bank through Moc Duc village was eroded 150 m, including a landslide that encroached 0.5 - 1 m deep into the asphalt concrete road, 30 m long, and a landslide 1 - 2 m from the asphalt road surface, 120 m long.

The landslides have an average depth of 3 m compared to the current river surface, about 8 m from the river edge, posing a danger to people and vehicles participating in traffic, affecting the safety of people's lives and property.

Faced with this situation, Cam Lo district allocated 470 million VND to temporarily reinforce the landslide section with a 70-meter-long rock cage. However, after the impact of the recent storm No. 4, cracks appeared on the surface of this temporary embankment.

Vice Chairman of Cam Lo District People's Committee Tran Hoai Linh said that upon receiving the information, the locality has directed the investor of the temporary reinforcement project for the above embankment section, the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the construction unit and the local government to conduct a site inspection, determine the cause of the crack and the responsibilities of the relevant parties. At the same time, there is a plan to handle the crack to ensure the quality of the project.

According to Mr. Linh, due to heavy rain from the impact of storm No. 4, the water level of Hieu River rose and flowed rapidly, combined with strong underground water flow in the residential area, causing the riverbed to sink deeper, leading to temporary subsidence of the stone cages and cracks.

In the long term, the locality has sent a document requesting the Provincial People's Committee, the Department of Planning and Investment, and relevant departments and branches to consider and promptly allocate the remaining capital of the project to urgently repair the landslide on the Thach Han riverbank through Quang Tri town and Trieu Phong district with an amount of 3.7 billion VND to invest in completing the emergency anti-erosion embankment through the vulnerable sections along the Hieu river through Cam Hieu commune.
