On the afternoon of January 9, 2023, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had a working session with the Standing Committee of the Ca Mau Provincial Party Committee on the implementation of socio-economic development tasks and the removal of difficulties and bottlenecks in the locality. At this meeting, the Prime Minister requested that the upgrade of Ca Mau Airport be completed by June 2025, so that large and modern aircraft such as the A321 and Boeing 777 can land.

Currently, central ministries and branches are focusing on completing the procedures to submit to the Government for approval as directed. According to the plan that the Ministry of Planning and Investment is synthesizing opinions from relevant ministries and branches to submit to the Government, the Ca Mau Airport expansion and upgrade investment project has a total capital of about 2,400 billion VND with the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) as the investor, using 100% of the equity capital of this enterprise.

In particular, the preparation of the pre-feasibility study report, submitting for approval of the investment policy is expected to take 6 months and the implementation time is 32 months from the date of approval of the investment policy (implementation time does not include site clearance time).

At present, Ca Mau province has issued a plan for investigation, survey, measurement, counting and issuance of land recovery notice. According to the plan submitted to the Ministry of Transport, Ca Mau Airport will be expanded by about 230 hectares, the number of households affected by the project is more than 1,000 households. The province is conducting measurement, counting; establishing, approving and implementing compensation, support and resettlement plans; handing over the site; handling requests, complaints, arising backlogs and results of compensation, support and resettlement work.

Ca Mau Province is determined to hand over 100% of the land to the investor to implement the project by December 31, 2024. According to the roadmap, the Ca Mau Airport upgrade project is expected to be completed by August 2025.

Ca Mau Airport is currently a level 3C airport according to ICAO standards, with a runway 1,500 m long, 30 m wide, asphalt concrete structure, only ensuring the operation of ATR 72 aircraft and equivalent.

According to the planning for the 2021 - 2030 period, the aircraft parking area south of the runway will accommodate about four parking positions. The airport will upgrade the existing passenger terminal and maintain the location of the civil aviation area according to the approved planning. Vision to 2050, the planning of the aircraft parking area north of the runway will be synchronized with the new civil aviation area, accommodating about 10 parking positions and have reserves for expansion when needed. Vision to 2050, the planning of a new passenger terminal north of the runway will have a capacity of about 3 million passengers/year; the planning of a cargo warehouse east of the new passenger terminal will have a capacity of about 3,000 tons of cargo/year.
