At the workshop, businesses and investors from both sides discussed the potential and opportunities for cooperation in the fields of information technology (IT) and innovation to take advantage of all possibilities and contribute to the common economic and trade development of the two countries.
The workshop was attended by Vietnamese Ambassador to India Nguyen Thanh Hai; Deputy Director of the National Innovation Center (NIC) under the Ministry of Planning and Investment of Vietnam Vo Xuan Hoai; representative of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ms. Bui Thi Thanh Hang; Director of the Da Nang Investment Promotion Agency, Ms. Huynh Lien Phuong; Commercial Counselor of the Embassy of Vietnam in India Bui Trung Thuong; Assistant to the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Dr. EV. Ramana Reddy; and representatives of many companies from the two countries.
Speaking at the conference, Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Hai assessed that Karnataka has great potential for cooperation and IT development. Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, is currently the 4th largest technology cluster in the world, after Silicon Valley, Boston and London. Karnataka has 47 IT special zones, many dedicated IT investment areas and 3,500 IT companies. The state has 550,000 IT professionals, accounting for 1/3 of the total number of IT professionals in the country.
Also according to Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Hai, Karnataka state has affirmed its position as a global startup and innovation center with more than 400 international research and development centers and 4,000 startups in Bangalore.
Karnataka also has Special Economic Zones (SEZs) for key sectors such as IT and communications, biotechnology, engineering, food processing, aerospace. The Karnataka government offers various financial incentives and policy support to businesses under the Karnataka Industrial Policy 2020-25, and has simplified investment procedures.
Deputy Director of the National Innovation Center (NIC), Mr. Vo Xuan Hoai, also assessed that Karnataka state has many achievements in science and technology development and innovation, while Vietnam is known as a dynamic country in promoting innovation with the Global Innovation Index ranked 48th out of 132 economies.
According to Mr. Vo Xuan Hoai, the two sides have a lot of potential for cooperation. He expressed his hope that in the coming time, the two sides will have many bilateral cooperation programs to promote innovation and increase investment in key areas of mutual interest such as IT, electronics, smart factories, smart cities and digital media.
Dr. E.V. Ramana Reddy said that Karnataka has the leading innovation ecosystem in India. Karnataka is the 4th largest tech cluster in the world; top 5 cities in artificial intelligence (AI) with over 485 global R&D and innovation centers; and ranked 8th in Startup Blink’s Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2023.
In the national rankings, Karnataka topped the India Innovation Index - NITI Aayog in 2019, 2020 and 2021; topped the FDI Inflows in 2022; topped the India Manufacturing Innovation Index. Additionally, Bengaluru is home to a quarter of India’s digital professionals, while Bangalore topped the number of jobs and jobs created.
Dr. Ramana Reddy expressed her hope that this online seminar will help connect and create opportunities for investors and businesses from both sides to meet and exchange to realize the development potential of the two countries.
Also at the Conference, Ms. Bui Thi Thanh Hang affirmed that Vietnam has great potential for digital economic development and vice versa, the digital economy also brings many development opportunities for Vietnam such as creating a more effective digital government, promoting innovation, helping to increase labor productivity, creating new growth momentum and gradually escaping the middle-income trap. In addition, the digital society also helps people have equal opportunities in accessing services, training and knowledge, while narrowing the development gap and reducing other disadvantages.
Representatives from the Vietnamese IT and communications industry such as the Vietnam Software and IT Services Association (VINASA), ZentSoft Software Solutions Joint Stock Company, etc. also attended the event. The speakers presented on the development potential of the IT industry in Vietnam.
Representative from Da Nang, Ms. Huynh Lien Phuong, introduced business cooperation opportunities in the central coastal city of Vietnam. According to her, priority investment areas in Da Nang include IT, software, biotechnology, environmental technology, automation, new materials, etc. Many large projects are being implemented by the city such as Da Nang High-Tech Park, Master Plan, etc., opening up many new opportunities for Indian investors and businesses to come and cooperate and implement investment and business.
Commercial Counselor of the Vietnamese Embassy in India Bui Trung Thuong expressed his hope that this online seminar will bring new opportunities for cooperation and development for the IT and communications industries of the two countries, while promoting trade and investment between Vietnam and Karnataka in particular, and Vietnam and India in general.
