Opening of the first satellite breast milk bank in the North Central region

This afternoon, August 14, Quang Tri General Hospital held the opening ceremony of the Satellite Breast Milk Bank. This is the first Satellite Breast Milk Bank in the North Central region and the third in the country.

The satellite breast milk bank at Quang Tri General Hospital was built with the support of Alive & Thrive Southeast Asia (A&T) with the aim of ensuring that newborns, especially premature babies, premature babies or babies with medical conditions who do not have their own mother's milk, can access breast milk within the first 3 days after birth through the provision of breast milk from the breast milk bank. This increases the rate of babies being breastfed early within the first hour after birth and exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life. After 4 months of planning, preparing infrastructure, equipment, technical training and building operating procedures, the satellite breast milk bank located on the 3rd floor, Building E, Quang Tri General Hospital has officially come into operation.

The establishment of the Satellite Breast Milk Bank not only contributes to reducing the rate of disease and positively impacts the health of children, but also helps to increase the rate of access to breast milk at the hospital. This is also an important milestone in the efforts of the medical team, doctors, hospital leaders and partner organizations to ensure that all children have the best start with breast milk.

The implementation of the Satellite Breast Milk Bank not only helps to expand the reach and increase the collection of breast milk but also contributes to improving the quality of healthcare for newborns in the community. At the same time, it contributes to raising people's awareness of the importance of breast milk, encouraging mothers to breastfeed their children; improving the quality of healthcare at hospitals and medical facilities in Quang Tri.

It is known that the Satellite Breast Milk Bank of Quang Tri General Hospital is a model connected to the Breast Milk Bank of Da Nang Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital. Currently, the Satellite Breast Milk Bank of Quang Tri General Hospital is implementing the third step in the process of a breast milk bank, including: screening and collecting raw breast milk; testing, processing and pasteurizing raw breast milk; managing and using pasteurized breast milk.

It is expected that the unit will continue to develop into a major source of raw milk for the breast milk bank. The collection, screening, pasteurization, distribution and use processes are always guaranteed to meet strict standards to ensure the highest quality milk source for each child.
