Sumitomo Corporation (Japan) is currently working with its strategic partner in Vietnam, BRG Group, to develop the North Hanoi Smart City (NHSC) project with a scale of 272 hectares in Dong Anh district, Hanoi city, and is expected to be implemented in 5 phases. NHSC will aim to build a sustainable community where residents will support and co-create to develop the community. Through connections and interactions with residents, NHSC will collect and test ideas and knowledge of sustainable urban development to bring a comfortable living environment, thereby developing new services for NHSC residents. In order to achieve the goals of NHSC, Sumitomo Corporation has implemented phase 1 of a pilot project called Smart Life Station on the 1st floor of Le Grand Jardin complex, Long Bien, Hanoi, to develop service infrastructure with the goal of establishing a sustainable community foundation. Building on the results of the first pilot phase, and aiming to further explore new mechanisms to engage residents in urban management, phase 2 of the pilot project will continue. The results of these phases will be applied in the development of NHSC with the goal of creating “a sustainable urban development that brings prosperity to each resident and the community in which they live”. Summary of the pilot project After Phase 1 of the project from March to September 2022 to encourage support and co-creation within the residential community, Sumitomo Corporation will strengthen its engagement with the residential community to initiate new pilot programs, focusing in particular on the fields of Education and Healthcare, two issues that have always received great attention from the community as shown in the first phase. Aiming at the goal of sustainable urban development, NHSC will provide solutions to key issues and meet the essential needs of the community to improve the quality of life and create a sustainable living model in Vietnam. NHSC aims to provide community amenities that no other urban area has, and join hands with residents to promote initiatives to create unique attractions for this city. 1) Providing a safe and secure community living space NHSC understands that natural community spaces will allow for connections of all ages, so Sumitomo Corporation has upgraded the design of the community space used in phase 1 in cooperation with leading design companies Tangent Design and Invention Ltd. and Tangent Japan Ltd., the authors of many outstanding works in the world. The community connection station is the starting point of residents' activities and the place that awakens residents' senses in the most natural way. Furthermore, to contribute to improving indoor air quality, NHSC will cooperate with Daikin Industries Ltd., a global leader in air conditioning. By installing Daikin air conditioning systems and displaying air quality on visual screens, NHSC hopes to change residents' perception of air quality in their living environment. 2) Bringing an educational model of developed countries With the goal of creating an area with the most advanced education system in Hanoi, the Community Connection Station will implement extracurricular educational programs such as STEAM as well as apply high-quality Japanese-style education systems, aiming to promote creativity and logical thinking, contributing to the training of global citizens. This will be a place where people can learn through experiential programs that are not provided through traditional educational programs. 3) Orienting health care habits, providing nutritional regimens and exercise methods to improve health To become the best health care place in Hanoi, NHSC will provide programs suitable for each resident based on individual health care data to improve nutrition, exercise habits and encourage changes in each resident's health behavior. Although health awareness among Vietnamese people is relatively high, many people still do not take concrete actions to improve their personal health. By raising awareness of health prevention and care as well as promoting behavioral change, NHSC hopes to bring a healthy and stable lifestyle to all residents of the city. Contributing to the development of Vietnam through NHSC Social infrastructure is identified as a key growth area under the Sumitomo Corporation Group's SHIFT 2023 medium-term operating policy, and the Group has focused on infrastructure and urban development projects, including the development of NHSC. In response to the needs of urban development in Vietnam, Sumitomo Corporation will launch a model in which private companies will build a city from scratch, contributing to the economy and industry of Vietnam by collaborating with industries, governments and academia in Japan and Vietnam. Sumitomo Corporation is aiming to bring NHSC’s services and framework models to other regions in Vietnam, other countries in ASEAN and eventually worldwide through the experiences and models implemented at NHSC.
