Exploiting indigenous culture to realize the dream of 'destination'

Bright spots in the West

In recent years, Yen Hoa tourist destination (Tuong Duong) has become well-known and welcomed many tourists to explore and experience. What makes Yen Hoa commune successful is the exploitation and effective promotion of local culture to build tourism products.

Here, there is a fairly large field of Ban Cooc, located next to the clear and charming Cha Ha stream. Along the stream, the locals place dozens of water wheels to bring water to irrigate the fields. The water wheels rotate day and night with the stream water, creating a peaceful and poetic scene of the highland village.

Realizing the potential for tourism, the commune has invested in installing a system of nearly 60 water wheels and renovating the paths between the fields for tourists to visit. Since then, tourists from all over have come to experience and check-in on the fields in Cooc village, especially next to the increasingly numerous water wheels, bringing income to the local people.

Not only rice fields and water wheels, Yen Hoa commune also exploits the cajuput forest in the area for tourism development purposes. The cajuput forest in Yen Tan village is about several decades old, with smooth tree trunks, green and closed canopy, which is a tourist attraction.

Under the forest canopy, some huts and huts are built for tourists to sightsee and enjoy local specialties such as five-color sticky rice, bamboo-tube rice, grilled meat, and canh ot. Sang Le forest is also a place to organize cultural exchanges to serve tourists, because Yen Hoa commune has an art troupe specializing in performing traditional folk songs and dances of the Thai people so that tourists can experience their identity.

Based on indigenous cultural features such as fields, streams, forests, culinary culture, and musical identity, we have developed a tourism development project, contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction. After a period of implementation, the initial effectiveness has been confirmed when the number of tourists coming to experience is increasing, and people have also begun to have a source of income.

MR. LO THANH - CHAIRMAN OF PEOPLE'S COMMITTEE OF YEN HOA COMMUNE

Similar to Yen Hoa commune, Muong Dan tourist destination, Hanh Dich commune (Que Phong) also exploits indigenous culture quite effectively. Muong Dan is an ancient Thai village, still preserving its identity, from stilt house architecture, customs, practices, brocade weaving and traditional folk songs.

In particular, the architecture of Muong Dan stilt houses must be mentioned, where many families still preserve their houses roofed with sa mu wood. Compared to the roofs of Mong people, the sa mu wood roofs of Thai people in Muong Dan are smaller in size and more carefully polished. This unique architectural feature has created the difference of Muong Dan ancient village compared to other Thai villages.

Therefore, in recent years, Que Phong district and Hanh Dich commune have exploited and developed community tourism in Muong Dan with ancient beauty, traditional dishes and musical identity.

The area also has a 7-storey waterfall complex, a famous scenic spot in Western Nghe An, which has contributed to attracting a large number of visitors to the ancient village of Muong Dan. Along with Yen Hoa and Muong Dan, many destinations in the province have promoted indigenous cultural elements to attract tourists. Typical examples are community tourism spots in Con Cuong district and Hoa Tien village (Quy Chau), Khe Co (Tuong Duong) and Co Muong (Que Phong)...

Need "guidance"

Nghe An is an ancient land with thousands of years of cultural traditions, home to many ethnic communities, so it has a rich and diverse identity, creating a driving force to promote tourism development. Many rural areas are endowed with beauty and valuable assets by nature and history, which is the potential to develop a "smokeless industry", helping people have more income.

Currently, besides localities that exploit and promote indigenous culture well to develop tourism, there are many localities that have potential and advantages but do not have the opportunity to develop.

Having the opportunity to visit Binh Chuan commune (Con Cuong), we were really impressed by the beautiful landscape and cultural identity of this land.

Here, Tham Tong cave is a masterpiece of nature, with a wide ceiling, many niches, and a beautiful stalactite system. Tham Tong is an ideal destination for those who love to explore and experience nature. Not to mention, Binh Chuan also has a beautiful dam and Na Co field, a Thai village that still preserves its identity and many local products.

But the potential here is still almost "dormant" because there is no investment and no one to "pioneer and lead the way".

Mr. Pham Xuan Manh - Chairman of the Commune People's Committee said: "Binh Chuan people want to exploit the landscape and culture to develop tourism but do not have the funding source and do not have experience in finding a direction. We hope that the tourism industry will support the survey, call for investment and guide the steps to make Binh Chuan a destination for tourists".

Tay Son Commune (Ky Son) is located not far from Muong Xen town, is home to the Mong community with unique cultural identity. In particular, Huoi Giang 1 and Huoi Giang 2 villages are considered the oldest Mong villages in Western Nghe An. Most of the houses here still have sa mu roofs, and peach and plum gardens bloom in every spring, creating the unique beauty of Mong villages.

Not to mention, people still preserve the cu xia and lu tau melodies, still retain the bustling sound of the Mong panpipe; still maintain long-standing production practices with famous products such as black chicken, black pig, upland melon, upland rice... In particular, there are dozens of hectares of sa mu forests creating majestic beauty, attracting tourists to explore.

But like Binh Chuan, the potential in Tay Son has not been exploited, Huoi Giang is still the "sleeping beauty in the forest". The Mong people in Pu Lon range are waiting for someone to wake up the sleeping "beauty", so that the sa mu tiled roofs, peach gardens, folk songs and the sound of Mong flutes will invite visitors to come here to explore and exchange.

There are still many localities that aspire to develop tourism from indigenous cultural resources such as: Tam Son Commune (Anh Son), Hung Tan Commune (Hung Nguyen), Minh Chau Commune (Dien Chau) and Tri Le Commune (Que Phong)... Local people wish to be supported, invested in resources and opened up directions so that the dream of "destination" soon becomes a reality.

Recently, many localities have exploited and promoted indigenous culture to develop tourism, helping people have more jobs and income, and have achieved initial results. Every year, the Department of Tourism conducts surveys of a number of locations, guides localities to call for investment capital and guides steps to achieve efficiency.
