Journey to the Roots
Among the historical and revolutionary relics throughout the province, Con Dao has the highest concentration, with the Con Dao Prison complex, Hang Duong Cemetery, and Hang Keo Cemetery. In recent years, the system of relics in Con Dao has effectively contributed to tourism .
Statistics from the Provincial Museum and Library show that from the beginning of the year to March 6th, the Con Dao Prison historical site system welcomed 36,637 visitors, an increase of 2.6% compared to the same period last year. Vietnamese tourists visiting Con Dao often embark on a journey back to their roots. Therefore, revolutionary historical sites always take the top priority in their sightseeing itineraries.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Men, General Director of My My Travel Company ( Binh Duong ), shared that in the minds of Vietnamese people, prison relics are places that bear witness to the tenacious struggle of generations of ancestors who bravely sacrificed themselves for the independence and peace of the Fatherland. Therefore, in 100% of the tours to Con Dao that My My Travel operates, Vietnamese customers request that the itinerary include visiting the relics first, followed by a nature and ecological experience.
In Con Dao, Hang Duong Cemetery is a significant spiritual destination. After Hang Duong Cemetery, the Con Dao historical site tour includes: the Museum, Phu Tuong Camp (French Tiger Cage), Phu Son Camp (Block II), the Governor's Residence, Phu Binh Camp (American Tiger Cage), the Lime Kiln Office, the Public House, the Cattle Pen, Hang Keo Cemetery, the Crane Office, Pier 914, and Ma Thien Lanh Bridge. These revolutionary historical sites have been renovated and regularly welcome visitors, contributing to the attractiveness of Con Dao tourism.
Linked to tourism development
The province has 48 classified historical sites. In recent years, many of these sites have been developed for tourism, such as the Minh Dam Revolutionary Historical Site, the memorial house of Heroine Vo Thi Sau, the Long Phuoc tunnel, and the Binh Gia Victory site. These sites have not only become significant destinations for traditional education and research for domestic visitors, but also attract foreign tourists, becoming attractive tourism products within the province's main tourism offerings and contributing to its socio-economic development.
During the period 2021-2024, historical sites throughout the province attracted approximately 8 million tourists. The province has invested in the restoration, preservation, and prevention of degradation of revolutionary historical sites with a total budget of over 394 billion VND. |
Observations made in late March at the Minh Dam revolutionary historical site, the memorial house and temple of the female heroic martyr Vo Thi Sau, the Long Phuoc tunnel... show that many groups from schools, veterans, and companies in the Southeast region and within the province have registered for tours, offering incense and sharing stories about traditions on weekends throughout April, May, and the summer.
According to information from the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Department continues to advise on and implement the program for the sustainable preservation and promotion of heritage values; upgrading, expanding, and reorganizing the exhibits at the Con Dao Museum and the Provincial Museum; and completing the digitization of cultural heritage sites in the province to promote historical values associated with revolutionary tradition education and tourism development. At the same time, it will organize cultural and artistic programs to create high-quality cultural products to serve the people and tourists at tourist destinations and routes, and provide automated audio guides at the Provincial Museum to better serve visitors.
