Attending the event were comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Head of the Central Propaganda Department; comrade Nguyen Manh Hung, member of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Information and Communications; leaders of central and local departments, ministries, branches, the Vietnam Publishing Association and many readers.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia emphasized: “On February 24, 2014, the Prime Minister signed a decision to make April 21 Vietnam Book Day, and in 2021 it will be changed to Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day. The choice of April 21 Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day, associated with the launch of the book “Duong Kach Menh” by President Ho Chi Minh, has profound significance in encouraging and developing reading culture in the community.”

He said that in recent times, Party committees, authorities, ministries and branches have actively directed and implemented many practical activities to promote the reading movement among the masses. Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day was organized extensively, practically and meaningfully with the response and close coordination of central and local agencies, along with many rich, diverse and highly attractive activities.

Comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia also highly appreciated the good and creative models in promoting the reading movement, especially the Book Street model in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City along with reading promotion programs that create cultural spaces, attract people's attention, create cultural beauty, promote reading habits, nurture love of books and thereby raise awareness of the entire political system and all classes of people about the role and importance of books...

Comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia also proposed tasks that agencies, departments, ministries, branches, etc. together with the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Vietnam Publishing Association need to pay more attention to and implement better to improve reading culture, including: Firstly, promoting dissemination, promoting education, propaganda and raising awareness in the political system and the whole society about the meaning and importance of books and reading culture for enriching knowledge, improving knowledge, skills, developing thinking, educating and shaping human personality. It is necessary to improve self-awareness in reading, considering reading as a method of self-study, helping us realize the value of codes of conduct and ethical standards, thereby having a more positive outlook and attitude in life.

Second, focus on investing in and supporting the establishment of institutions and activities to promote reading in schools, agencies and units from the central to local levels, creating a habit of reading books among all classes of people, paying attention to developing and encouraging good models in reading, researching and applying knowledge from books to life. Promote the organization of activities related to books and reading culture in the system of schools, cultural houses, cultural points, villages, residential communities, and grassroots areas...

Third, it is necessary to promote the creation of works and projects of high ideological, scientific, educational, cultural value to serve the increasing needs of readers. Encourage the publication of good and valuable books, ensuring diversity and attractiveness, meeting the needs of the public, readers and all classes of people. Promote the role of enterprises, attract social resources to invest in developing the publishing industry, promoting books and reading culture.

Fourth, promote the publication, printing and distribution of books, linking the development of reading culture with digital transformation to create new values, focusing on developing reading culture in media, newspapers, technology platforms, and social networks. Exploit and use forms and methods of electronic publishing, audiobooks, compact books, etc. to create a stronger and more widespread influence among all classes of people.

Fifth, expand cooperation and exchange relations, actively participate in international book activities, especially the World Book and Copyright Day event on April 23 every year. Organize international book fairs and participate in foreign book fairs to attract major publishing units in the region and the world. Strengthen activities to introduce and promote Vietnamese works and authors to international friends, etc., thereby contributing to enhancing the image, position and prestige of Vietnam in the region and internationally.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day, Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung mentioned four messages of this year: "Good books need readers"; "Precious books for friends"; "Giving good books - Buying real books"; "Good books: Eyes to read - Ears to listen" are simple but have profound meanings. This year's Book Day aims not only to honor books, writers and bookmakers, but also to honor readers, to revive reading culture, with the hope that the publishing industry will contribute to building the people's knowledge base, developing the intellectual team, meeting the requirements of industrialization and modernization of the country.

Many readers came to visit and buy books on the opening night of the event.

Minister Nguyen Manh Hung also suggested that the whole industry needs to innovate and be more creative, in the spirit that publishing is first and foremost a political and cultural field, but at the same time it is also an economic sector. Politics has the support of the State, culture has the support of the people, and economy has the support of the market. Harmoniously combining the three elements of politics, economy and culture is the key to help publishing achieve success.

Before that, delegates visited the rare book display booths, the book sales and introduction booths of publishing units, as well as experienced the tea culture space at the Book Fair.

The series of Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day will be held throughout April 2024, focusing on events from April 17 to May 1 at the Temple of Literature (58 Quoc Tu Giam Street, Van Mieu Ward, Dong Da District, Hanoi); Exhibitions, Book Fairs with the theme of Vietnam's land and people on modern electronic versions and direct publications.

About 60 units participated, displayed, introduced and provided readers with over 40,000 valuable books at the Fair space to celebrate Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day at the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam.
