On the afternoon of February 2 (the 5th day of the Lunar New Year), a group of 26 international visitors from many countries visited Thanh Hai water puppetry troupe to watch a water puppet show after docking at Thai Binh River.
During the performance, the artists brought 7 attractive plays such as: King Le Loi returns the sword, Teu spearhead, dragon burns Bodhi leaves, planting rice, plowing...
The rustic and lively performances, recreating the working and living life of rural people, left a deep impression on foreign visitors. The performance also attracted many local people to enjoy on the first day of spring.
Ms. Sylvia Margaret, the oldest tourist in the group (85 years old) from New Zealand said: “This is the first time I have seen such a great traditional folk art show. The trip not only gave me the opportunity to learn about traditional water puppetry but also an experience rich in Vietnamese culture.”
In previous years, the water puppet troupe often organized spring performances in the southern provinces and the Central Highlands. However, in recent years, Thanh Hai water puppet troupe has become an ideal destination for students and people in the province to visit and experience.
According to Mr. Pham Khac Xoa, head of Thanh Hai water puppetry, since 2024 the ward has cooperated with many primary schools and kindergartens in Hai Duong city and Thanh Ha district to perform water puppetry. Through the performances, students enjoy the program, contributing to preserving traditional cultural values.
Thanh Hai water puppetry has a history of more than 300 years. Since 1999, water puppet lovers in An Liet village have come together to restore and rebuild the puppet troupe. Initially, there were only 20 artists participating, but now the number of members has increased to 29.
