In 2010, during his visit to Ninh Binh to wish everyone a happy new year, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong (then Chairman of the National Assembly) visited Phat Diem Bishopric in Kim Son district. After more than 14 years, the impressions of a simple, friendly leader and his advice on national unity and religious unity are still deeply imprinted in the minds of religious dignitaries, cadres, and party members who were lucky enough to attend the meeting that year.
A simple, approachable leader, devoted to the people
Quietly looking at the photo of him shaking hands with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong during the meeting on February 11, 2010, Father Giuse Pham Ngoc Khue (Parish Priest of Ton Dao) could not hide his sorrow when he heard the news that the highest leader of the Party had passed away. Father Khue recalled: At that time, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was holding the position of Chairman of the 12th National Assembly. When we heard that he was visiting Phat Diem Bishopric, we were very happy and actively prepared to welcome him with the highest ceremony reserved for a politician of the country. The meeting that day took place in a friendly and open atmosphere. I was especially impressed with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, a man with a scholarly appearance, elegant, simple dress, friendly conversation, warm voice and gentle smile. He shook hands and asked about the health of each priest and monk; at the same time kindly asked the parishioners about their lives and work. He also spent a lot of time talking with us about the consistent policy of the Party and State to always respect and ensure the freedom of belief and religion of all people.
After that meeting, and following his activities through the media, I truly felt that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is a person who lives wholeheartedly for the people, for the nation, and for the people.
"Hearing the news that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong had passed away, the images of the meeting, his handshake and his gentle smile 14 years ago came back to my memory. I felt an infinite sadness when I had to say goodbye to a great personality of the nation, a simple, close leader, devoted to the people" - Priest Giuse Pham Ngoc Khue emotionally shared.
Engrave the lesson of national solidarity
Also during his visit to Phat Diem Bishopric on February 11, 2010, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong spent a lot of time advising cadres, party members, priests, monks, and parishioners about the precious tradition of solidarity of our nation. At the same time, he hoped that the Party Committee, government, and religions of Kim Son district would continue to preserve and promote the spirit of great national solidarity and solidarity between religions and non-religious people to build an increasingly prosperous homeland.
Those simple, rustic but profound sayings are still deeply imprinted in the memory of comrade Hoang Van Thang, Secretary of Yen Khanh District Party Committee, who also attended the meeting that year in his capacity as Head of the Mass Mobilization Committee of Kim Son District Party Committee.
Comrade Hoang Van Thang said: Speaking at the meeting in 2010, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, then Chairman of the National Assembly, emphasized that the Vietnamese people, including Catholics, all have the same origin, the same Lac Hong bloodline, and the same goal of building a prosperous Vietnam, a strong country, a fair, democratic, and civilized society. At the same time, he affirmed the consistent policy of our Party and State to promote the strength of great national unity, solidarity between Catholics and non-Catholics according to President Ho Chi Minh's ideology to successfully carry out the cause of building and defending the Fatherland. During my work in Kim Son district, later as a key leader of the district, I always thoroughly grasped the advice of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on great national unity, solidarity between Catholics and non-Catholics in leadership and direction to successfully and comprehensively carry out the political tasks of the locality.
Not only is it a "compass" for cadres and party members, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's advice on national unity and solidarity between religions is also always remembered and implemented by dignitaries, officials and Catholics in Kim Son district.
Priest Peter Nguyen Hong Phuc (Parish Priest of Khiet Ky) said: Over the years, the monks and parishioners of Phat Diem Diocese in general, and Khiet Ky Parish in particular, have always fulfilled their civic responsibilities, respected God and loved their country; strictly followed the Party's guidelines and policies and the State's laws; enthusiastically worked and produced, contributed to socio-economic development and participated in local patriotic emulation movements. Many parishioners have become exemplary models in economic development, actively contributed funds and efforts to the new rural construction movement... Although General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has passed away forever, we will continue to carry out his instructions 14 years ago, as well as carry out the content of the General Letter of the Catholic Bishops' Council of Vietnam, which is "Accompanying the nation, living the gospel in the heart of the nation", respecting God and loving the country; accompanying the government and people of Kim Son district to build the locality more and more prosperous.
The stories and sharing of witnesses who directly met and talked with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong during his visit to Phat Diem Bishopric in 2010 contributed to highlighting the character of a simple leader who lived wholeheartedly for the people and devoted his whole life to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation.
