The “key” to competition
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai is a tourist from Hanoi who came to Hue on the occasion of the opening of the National Tourism Year - Hue 2025. With at least 5 times of experience attending opening ceremonies in localities, Ms. Mai shared: "Hue has something very poetic, rich in cultural identity, full of art and I want to find that difference on this trip".
A quick survey of more than a dozen guests revealed that the answer to their travel through different localities was to seek experiences and differences. Many tourists today no longer want to stay in one destination for too long, but want to spend time on experiential travel to many places. Mr. Thai Nhat Van, a tourist from Binh Thuan, shared: “During the two long holidays of the year, Lunar New Year and April 30 - May 1, my family often plans trips, one day in each province or city. Places with many interesting experiences can be stopped longer. The landscape and space of the destinations must certainly be different, but the difference that the family wants to experience is the products and services. How, only when going there, can we experience that feeling”.
Compared to other localities in the country, Hue is a locality with many tourism resources and diverse types of tourism. Although there have been many bright spots in the growth of visitors in recent years, in terms of potential and strengths, Hue tourism has not yet developed to its full potential. Recently, at the conference promoting Lang Son tourism destination in 2025 in Hue City with the theme "Who goes to Lang with me..." organized by the Center for Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion of Lang Son province on the afternoon of March 24, I was quite surprised by the information that the total number of visitors to this locality in 2024 reached more than 4.2 million. This number is larger than the nearly 3.9 million visitors in 2024 of Hue City. Without discussing the statistics, there will be an implicit comparison when Hue is a famous destination and in the past, when thinking about Vietnam tourism, people mentioned Hue - Saigon - Hanoi tourism.
According to some tourism experts, with its potential and available resources, Hue tourism has a fairly early starting point compared to many other provinces and cities in the Central and South Central regions. However, up to now, in the increasingly fierce competition, the locality's position is being led by young, dynamic tourist cities. In many types of tourism, Hue has only exploited the surface of its potential, not focusing on the depth of its products in terms of professionalism, high-class, creating an impression, unique tourism products, creating a difference. Typically, in terms of sea tourism, Hue has many beautiful beaches but is still "poor" in terms of services. Currently, there are mainly only swimming in the sea and enjoying cuisine.
Make a difference
According to many tourism experts, nowadays, tourists want to learn about history, people, and stories behind each construction, destination, and cultural feature. If you know how to tell stories, each destination will become more attractive and memorable.
To be fair, Hue tourism has done a lot. It has harmonized the factors of sustainable tourism development, developed but still done a very good job of preserving heritage values; is one of the cities honored as a clean tourism city of ASEAN... However, exploiting the depth of the product, creating typical products of the land, stimulating tourists to want to quickly come to experience is probably still not good.
In a post on thesaigontimes.vn, Mr. Tran Quang Trung, Director of WorldTrans Company (Da Nang branch) said that cultural tourism cannot be just about sightseeing but must create opportunities for tourists to immerse themselves in local life, from learning traditional crafts, participating in religious activities to enjoying folk art in a lively way. The development of tourism products needs to be based on the unique cultural identity of each region, avoiding copying or stereotyping. At the same time, it is necessary to invest systematically to create products with depth and sustainable value, instead of fragmented, short-term development.
Recently, in his speech at the opening ceremony of the National Tourism Year - Hue 2025, Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh also emphasized that in the coming time, the tourism industry needs to thoroughly grasp the direction of the Prime Minister in Directive No. 08/CT-TTg, dated February 23, 2024 on comprehensive, fast and sustainable tourism development with the motto "Unique products - Professional services - Convenient and simple procedures - Reasonable prices - Clean and beautiful environment - Safe, civilized and friendly destinations". One of the key tasks proposed by the Deputy Prime Minister is to implement comprehensive and synchronous solutions on planning and investment attraction to create unique and classy tourism products associated with unique cultural heritage values.
Director of the Department of Tourism, Ms. Tran Thi Hoai Tram said that in the coming time, Hue will focus on repositioning its product range to suit the market and new trends to ensure the brand of Hue tourism. Developing destinations, products, and high-class, professional, and unique tourism services associated with culture - heritage; sea, lagoon, and people of Hue. In particular, the focus is on building tourism products with the Hue brand, improving the quality of heritage tourism associated with the Complex of Hue Monuments and Hue Royal Court Music.
