Authorities in Mang Yang district (Gia Lai) are investigating a case in which a series of coffee trees belonging to local people were cut down by criminals in the district.
On November 9, Mr. Ho Ngoc Thang, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dak Djrang Commune (Mang Yang District) confirmed that a household had just cut down 23 old coffee trees that were about to be harvested. The incident was reported to the leaders of Mang Yang District.
Sharing with VietNamNet, Ms. Dao Thi Mai (born in 1992, residing in De Ron village, Dak Djrang commune, Mang Yang district) said that she had sent a petition to Dak Djrang commune police, requesting that the authorities promptly investigate and clarify the case of coffee tree cutting to protect the legitimate rights and interests of her family.
According to Ms. Mai, due to her job, she asked her parents to take care of the garden with 400 coffee trees planted in 2007. On the afternoon of November 7, while visiting the garden, her father, Mr. Dao Dinh Phi (born in 1967), discovered a series of coffee trees that were ready to be harvested, being cut down by bad guys.
At the scene, there were 23 old coffee trees with lush foliage and heavy fruit that had been cut down, with broken branches scattered around the base. The signs of the cutting were still fresh, with the branches and leaves still fresh.
Ms. Mai said that because it rained heavily on November 6, her family did not go into the garden. On the afternoon of November 7, when they went into the garden, they saw that 23 coffee trees had been completely destroyed, causing great damage to the family.
According to Ms. Mai, if the trees were stolen, there would still be trees to bear fruit next year. Now that the trees have been cut down like this, next year is considered a total loss. It will take 5-6 years to restore or replant them before they can harvest.
Ms. Vu Thi Xuan (Ms. Mai’s mother) confirmed that for many years she has been farming here, her family has never had any conflicts or disagreements with anyone. This incident has left the family restless.
According to initial records, the thieves cut down the tree but did not harvest the fruit, so it could be due to personal conflicts.
