TPO - China revealed that the plan to build a base on the Moon is being implemented in two separate phases to create a series of bases on the Moon's surface and in orbit.

The first phase of China's lunar base will be completed around 2035 near the lunar south pole, and an expanded model will be built around 2050, if all goes according to plan.
The initial roadmap for the China-Russia-led International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) was announced in June 2021. The two countries outlined plans to build a robotic base on the Moon through five super-heavy rocket launches between 2030 and 2035.
China has now taken the lead and revealed a more advanced two-stage plan for ILRS at the Second International Deep Space Exploration Conference in China's Anhui Province recently.
The first phase will be completed around 2035 near the lunar south pole and an expanded model will be built around 2050, according to Wu Yanhua, chief designer of China's deep space exploration project.
The expanded model would be a comprehensive lunar station network using the lunar orbital station as the hub and the south pole station as the main base, including exploration nodes on the lunar equator and the far side of the Moon.
The ILRS will be powered by solar, radioisotope, and nuclear power generators. The next infrastructure will be a high-speed Moon-Earth and lunar surface communications network, lunar vehicles such as hoppers, unmanned long-range vehicles, and manned and unmanned rovers.
Notably, the expanded ILRS model will help lay the groundwork for future manned landings on Mars.
China has been courting partners for ILRS. Senegal became the 13th country to sign up for the project at the conference. Meanwhile, NASA is leading Artemis, a parallel but separate program to return humans to the moon. Both China and NASA aim to land astronauts on the moon before the end of the decade.
