Kaspersky researchers have discovered a new malicious spy mod in WhatsApp, which is now popular in the Telegram messaging app.

Kaspersky has discovered a new WhatsApp mod that not only offers features like message scheduling and customization options, but also contains a malicious spyware module.

While the victims were identified globally, the malware targeted users who communicated in Arabic and Azeri, with a reach of more than 340,000 attacks in one month.

The malicious mod found its way through popular Telegram channels, some of which have up to two million subscribers. Kaspersky researchers alerted Telegram to the issue. In October alone, Kaspersky’s telemetry systems detected more than 340,000 attacks involving the mod.

To help users avoid the risk of becoming victims of cyber attacks and have a safer online experience, Kaspersky experts recommend that users download applications and software from official and reputable sources, use reputable security software, and learn about common scams...
