The Masters, the first major tournament of the year, officially opened with the honorary tee-off from three legendary figures: Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson. After that, 95 golfers officially embarked on the journey to conquer the prestigious green jacket at Augusta National.
Justin Rose's Dream Start
44-year-old golfer Justin Rose made an impressive start to his bid for his second major title (after the 2013 US Open) when he shot a career-low 65 (-7) at Augusta National.
Rose is three strokes clear of a group of pursuers including world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, last year's runner-up Ludvig Aberg and Canadian Corey Conners.
Rose nearly tied the Augusta course record (63), and clenched his fists in emotional celebration after draining a 19-foot birdie putt at the 16th hole to raise his score to -8.
But his tee shots went wide into the trees on the 17th and 18th holes, and Rose missed the chance to set a record. Despite saving a par on the 17th, Rose still finished the round on the 18th with his first bogey of the day.
Despite the errors, Rose held on to his first-round lead, his fifth at The Masters. Since winning his first major in 2013, the title has eluded Rose, although he has finished runner-up twice in 2015 and 2017.
“I believe I played well enough to win this tournament. I just don't have the green jersey to prove it," Rose said. "I've had some great rounds here, and of course the ultimate goal is to win the championship."

McIlroy regretfully lost the advantage
World No. 2 golfer Rory McIlroy - who is looking for the final piece of the puzzle at the Masters to complete the Grand Slam - continued to struggle at Augusta.
Despite playing solidly for the first 14 holes without making any bogeys to reach -4, McIlroy suddenly collapsed with two consecutive double bogeys at holes 15 and 17.
On the 15th hole, his approach shot went over the green, then he chipped back hard and the ball ended up in the water. The 17th hole saw a similar mistake, with him chipping poorly and missing a 6-foot bogey putt.
McIlroy finished the round with an even par (72), falling to T27 on the leaderboard. He refused to answer questions after the round, a clear sign of disappointment. To continue to nurture his hopes of competing, the Northern Irish star must have a sublime second round.

Scheffler silently followed
Scottie Scheffler – the world's number 1 golfer and also the number 1 candidate for the championship – started firmly with a bogey-free round and scored -4 (68 strokes).
With consistent form, Scheffler is gradually getting closer to the goal of successfully defending the title and becoming the first person to do this since Tiger Woods in 2002.
If he wins, he will join the legendary group of three-time Masters champions including Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods himself.
“I was happy with the round today,” Scheffler said. “The course is getting firmer, the greens are quite fast and the landing areas are tight, so every shot has to be very precise. It will be a challenging week."
